Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500

 

Stewart Wins Second
Tony Stewart became the second driver to win two races in his rookie season since the late Davey Allison. Stewart finished 2.081 seconds ahead of Mark Martin to claim his 11th top-five finish of the season. Stewart dominated the event, leading 150 laps, the fifth time that he has led the most laps this season. With a sixth-place finish, Dale Jarrett edged closer to his first championship. Jarrett now leads Bobby Labonte by 231 points and needs to finish 31st or better in the final two races to clinch the title.

    Andretti on Pole at PIR
    John Andretti's grandfather passed away on Wednesday. On Friday, Andretti was able to dedicate the pole position in his honor. Andretti will start from the top-spot for the Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Andretti circled the one-mile oval in 27.126 seconds, at 132.714 mph, for a new track record. Jeff Gordon will start from the outside pole, while Geoffrey Bodine and Mark Martin make out row two.
