Pennzoil 400
Stewart Wins First Event at Miami-Homestead, Jarrett Wins First Championship
Tony Stewart won the inaugural Winston Cup race at the Miami-Homestead Speedway, holding off teammate Bobby Labonte by 5.289 seconds to claim back-to-back wins. Stewart used a late race bump on his teammate, after emerging from the pits, to gain an advantage over Labonte and claim the win in the Pennzoil 400 presented by Kmart. Stewart becomes the first-ever driver to win three races in his rookie season in the Winston Cup series. With a solid fifth place finish, Dale Jarrett laid claim to his first Winston Cup championship. Jarrett, along with father Ned, becomes only the second father and son tandem to win the Winston Cup, joining Lee and Richard Petty.
Green Wins Inaugural Pole at Homestead
David Green had two firsts on Friday, he grabbed the first pole position of his Winston Cup career and the first-ever pole for a Winston Cup event at the Homestead track. Green will lead the field to the green flag for the Pennzoil 400 on Sunday. Green turned a fast lap of 34.669 seconds, at 155.759 mph to knock John Andretti out of the top spot. Andretti will start from the outside pole, while Bobby Labonte, Dave Blaney, and Ward Burton round out an all Pontiac top five.
