NAPA AutoCare 500
Gordon Wins First without Evernham
The Brian Whitesell era has begun in a huge way, as Jeff Gordon won his first victory under the guidance of his new crew chief. Gordon was able to hold off a hard charging Dale Earnhardt by .198 seconds to take the checkered flag for the NAPA AutoCare 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Gordon won for the sixth time this season and the 48th time in his career.
Front Row Joe on Martinsville Pole
Joe Nemechek scored the fourth pole of his career, barely missing a track record at Martinsville Speedway. Nemechek's lap of 19.886 seconds, at 95.223 mph, did, however, set the event record for the NAPA AutoCare 500. Ted Musgrave turned a surprisingly fast lap to grab the outside pole, Geoffrey Bodine and Kyle Petty make out row two.
