Pepsi Southern 500

Burton Pulls Darlington Sweep
The equation is simple, Darlington + rain = Jeff Burton in Victory Lane. Jeff Burton swept both Darlington races this season, each time the event was shortened by rain. Burton took the checkered flag for the Pepsi Southern 500 on lap 270, 96 laps short of the scheduled 366 laps. With the win, Burton pocketed one million dollars via the Winston No Bull Five program, his second million dollar bonus through the program. Burton has now won five times this season and ten times in his career.

    Irwin on Southern 500 Pole
Kenny Irwin grabbed the pole position for the Pepsi Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Irwin will start from the top spot for the third time in his career. Irwin's lap of 28.763 seconds, at 167.215 mph, was enough to hold off Ward Burton, who will start second. Jerry Nadeau will start from the third position and Jeff Gordon, who has won four straight Southern 500s, will start fourth.
