Jarrett, Burton Test at Homestead

MIAMI (Oct. 29, 1999) -- Dale Jarrett and Jeff Burton know what it's like to win at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Nevertheless, the two NASCAR Winston Cup stars were at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday, testing for the inaugural Pennzoil 400 presented by Kmart on November 14, the debut of NASCAR's premier division in South Florida.

Jarrett won the first race ever held at the state-of-the-art Speedway in 1995, while Burton won last year's Busch Series finale. Both drivers feel the heavier NASCAR Winston Cup stock cars present a different challenge than their Busch Series counterparts.

"It would be pretty special to win the first Busch race and the first Winston Cup race at a place like this," said Jarrett, the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Series points leader. "I hope it doesn't happen like it did in 1995 (when he went from third to first on the final green flag lap), but we' ll take it if we have to.

"We found a couple things in the test that we think are going to be beneficial. It's obvious that getting off of these corners is of utmost importance. Miami is going to be a lot like Indianapolis where you're going to set up people coming off the corners to make a pass. It looks like the NASCAR Winston Cup cars could put on an even better race and drive better than the Busch cars do here. I think it's going to be exciting, and it's something new for everybody. We're testing here to try to get a leg up on everybody."

Jarrett won the debut race at the Speedway when the top two cars tangled while racing to the white flag. Burton didn't lead until exiting the final turn on the final lap in last year's event, edging Jimmy Spencer by about six inches.

"This track is a lot different than people will think it is, because it's very difficult to get your car to do everything you want it to," Burton explained. "It boils down to where you want to compromise. You're not going to be good in all four corners here, and understanding which corner you can give up is imperative.

"It's hard to judge how we've done in this test like this with only two cars," added Burton, a six-time Winston Cup winner in 1999. "We'll judge how well we've tested when we come back here to race."
