In the Loop: Kyle Busch Dominates Doubleheader

FONTANA, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2009) – Kyle Busch entered unchartered territory Saturday, becoming the first driver in NASCAR history to win two national series races in one day. What is more impressive, however, is the manner in which it was done.

Busch earned a perfect Driver Rating of 150.0 in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series San Bernardino County 200 and the NASCAR Nationwide Series Stater Bros. 300 at Auto Club Speedway.  It was the fifth time Busch accomplished the feat in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and second in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He also posted a perfect Driver Rating in the last NASCAR Nationwide Series event held at Auto Club Speedway, in August 2008.

Driver Rating takes several statistical categories into consideration, including Average Running Position, Percentage of Laps Led and Percentage of Fastest Laps Run. Busch dominated each of these categories in both races:

Category                                      NCWTS San Bernardino 200                    NNS Stater Bros. 300
Average Running Position                             1.070                                                   1.120
% of Laps Led                                                  95.0                                                    95.3
% of Fastest Laps Run                                      41.1                                                    47.2

This is just the third time a driver has won both a NASCAR Nationwide Series and a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race in the same weekend. There have been 31 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series-NASCAR Nationwide Series sweeps. No driver has ever won all three races in the same weekend.

So how do you top one of the best single day performances in the sport’s history?

“Now what you look for is trying to get the triple,” Busch said.

Busch will start 10th in Sunday’s Auto Club 500. He has one win, three top fives, seven top 10s and a pre-race Driver Rating of 107.6 in nine career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at the track.
