WIX FILTERS LAP LEADER NOTES FOR THE SAMSUNG 500 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES RACE AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY, APRIL 6, 2008.
Jimmie Johnson led five times for 65 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in today’s Samsung 500. Johnson captured the award for the second time this season. He has led at least one lap in five of the seven Sprint Cup races this season (291 total laps).
Johnson scored a second-place finish in today’s race, his third top-five and third top-10 finish this season.
UNOFFICIALLY Johnson is sixth in the Sprint Cup Series championship standings, 144 points behind leader Jeff Burton. Johnson is 36 points behind fifth-place Tony Stewart and eight ahead of eighth-place Denny Hamlin.
JOHNSON QUOTES: “Good run throughout the day today. I’m just real proud of all the effort that’s gone into to picking up our intermediate track program. It really showed today. I ran up front, led a little bit. I think clean air was really, really important and I was really shocked today at how bad the cars drove in traffic. In the last two intermediate tracks our stuff had bigger problems than worrying about how the car drove. It was really unfortunate. You’d catch people and the guy in front of you, you’d run their pace. I really think we need to look at some changes to help these cars not be so aero-dependent. They’re safer, they’re doing a lot of things in the right way but we really need to look at making some changes so that these cars can have a little bit more downforce so that when we get into low downforce situations there’s more grip in the car.”
