Can you talk about some of the changes you had with your car and the track?
"The track changed a little bit just with the temperature change in turn one with the shadows coming down on the racetrack a little bit. The tires change when you put another set on. They're not all the same. There are a little bit of difference between them. You're never going to know exactly what the compound is. A couple of sets were a little bit different than some others. The last set we put on were just horrendously tight. It was just so bad. We were lucky to hang on to a third-place finish."

Did you think you had a shot at the No. 99 (Carl Edwards) at the end of the race?
"I knew the No. 99 was holding back and waiting, not showing everything that he had. He probably could've lead however many laps there were today. He didn't show his full hand. We knew he was pretty good. The No. 48 (Jimmie Johnson) was pretty good. I figured that most of the race the No. 99 was just holding back, hanging out and just chilling."

Was there a point in the race where you were just hoping to finish as high as you could and give up the win?
"That's what I do every race. If there's a shot to go for second, then we would've taken it. There at the end, it was just survival. It was about holding off those guys behind us. It wasn't going to be to move forward at all because we were so tight. If we had a different race car, probably I would've tried a little bit harder, but it wasn't worth it today."

Do you think you had a good race today, despite not winning?
"We didn't wreck, so that's okay. We battled our car all day long, and couldn't really ever get it right. Was it fun to drive? No. Was it hard to drive? Yes. Did it survive the day? Yes. So was it a good day? Sure."

How would you evaluate your weekend overall?
"We got a win and a third-place finish -- my best finish here in a Cup car -- so I'd evaluate the weekend as a positive. Now, going into Phoenix, another place where I tend to run well, I'm pretty excited about that. I'm excited to take a couple days off."

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Did you think it was the right decision to stay out during the final caution?
"It was a tough decision. In the place where we were at, you don't know whether it's right or wrong. Mike (Ford, crew chief) made the call and I was with it. It felt like we had a third-, fourth-place car there at the end and ended up fifth. I just don't think we had the car to win the race anyway."

What happened at the end of the race with Clint Bowyer and how are you feeling?
"Clint just pinched me up there on the final lap. I had to turn left or I'd have gone into the wall. There's really no place to go. I didn't feel well (during the race). It's just the heat, the long runs, so I'll try to get better. I'm feeling much better now. It really hit me when I got out of the car. I was just really dizzy and knew I needed to sit down."

Was today a good day for the point standings?
"I'm glad for FedEx and JGR. We continue to move up in the points and Toyota gave us a good car today. I hope we continue to move up next week. That's always good. The FedEx car was hooked up in Phoenix last year and I hope we'll do well again next week."

How was the race car this weekend?
"I think we did some things ourselves as the No. 20 car that we shouldn't have. Our car was pretty good in the first practice and we couldn't undo them today. I guess a lot of people would like to redo things at times. We talked about it and made the changes. It wasn't big things, just little things we needed to help our center and not worry so much about other parts of the corners. It seemed like the whole race track had a lot less grip than what we had yesterday. The temperature was up. We were a lot tighter in the center and loose in entry and looser on exit. I think track position was important. We started 24th and that just killed us. We were decent, we just could never get any better."

Can you talk about the decision to take pit during the last caution and take two tires?
"We saw them getting off pit road and that killed our opportunity to benefit from two tires, but at that point it was too late to put four on. We wanted to make sure we were the first on out on tires. With three laps to go, I think it was a good call. We ended up costing ourselves a position at the end of it. If things worked out we would have been fine. This is just one of those times where you have to take chances."

Was today a good day for the point standings?
"It was an okay day. I thought we had a better car than the 16th-place finish shows. Nobody gave up though, and we improved the car by the end of the race. It should end up a decent points day for us."

How do you feel after today's race?
"I feel great after running 500 miles. I wish we would have had a better finish, but I am glad we were able to go the distance today. I'm looking forward to being on 'The Today Show' tomorrow with my wife Jami. It will be great exposure for the sport."

What caused the smoke that came from your car?
"The motor all of a sudden got hot and dropped a cylinder then started blowing water out of the exhaust. We're just digging ourselves a deeper hole. All we have to do is finish and we'll be okay, but we can't even seem to do that. I'm really disappointed and hate it for UPS and everybody at Michael Waltrip Racing. We got let down there. We'll pick up and qualify on time next week."

What happened that caused you to spin and make contact with the wall?
"It was tough. We were actually pretty decent to begin with. We made some changes and kept getting the car a little better and better. It was way too tight at the beginning of a run, so we made some adjustments. We just got too free there at the end, and I got too loose off of turn two. I tried to save it. I thought it would be better off to lock it up, but it was a bad move. It's just definitely not what we wanted to happen for our hometown sponsor."
