EXPRESS NOTES:
Red Hot at Martinsville - Hamlin, FedEx Racing Score First 2008 Win: Ask Denny Hamlin and the #11 team and they will tell you it was coming. They might not have been able to tell you when, but they had run too well on too many occasion for wins to continue eluding them. On Sunday afternoon in Martinsville, the frustration of missed opportunities was undone as Hamlin and the team charged to the front, and then took the checkered to capture their first win since Loudon in July of 2007. After pitting from the lead, and not bringing the field with him, it looked as though Hamlin wouldn't have enough time to reach the leaders by the end. However, the combination of pit strategy and Hamlin's eagerness to make up for the mistake carried the #11 to the front. He passed then leader Jeff Burton with 82 laps to go and never looked back. A win at Martinsville - and the grandfather clock trophy that marks the achievement - means a great deal to the Virginia native.
"This is the one we've been waiting for," said Hamlin. "We've had some terrible luck and we were starting to think it might never change. To come here and win this race, and do it front of these Virginia fans is really special to me, and I believe it's the momentum boost we needed. This team did an awesome job today - I am glad we can put the last couple of weeks behind us, enjoy this win, and move onto Texas, a place where we've run well in the past."
Hamlin, FedEx Kinko's and March of Dime Team up in Texas: Denny Hamlin will be in Texas early this week, on hand to make a special announcement with FedEx Kinko's and the March of Dimes. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2 at White Rock Lake Park in Dallas. As part of the announcement, Hamlin will be presented with a specially designed helmet by five year old Dallas native Tiffany Bell-Nunez and will unveil the start/finish line for the 2008 March for Babies - to be held at the park later this month. For more information on the event, please contact Steve Shunck at 317-716-9183.
Hamlin at Texas Motor Speedway: This weekend will mark Hamlin's sixth start at Texas Motor Speedway, a track that has been very good to Hamlin and the #11 FedEx team. In only his fifth career Cup start, he piloted the #11 FedEx Chevy to a seventh-place finish. Hamlin has continued to perform well since, recording a fourth-place finish in the spring race last season, and posted a tenth-place finish in the 2006 edition of the Chase for the Nextel Cup. Despite going a lap down in the spring 2007 event at TMS, Hamlin and team rallied back for a ninth-place finish. Last fall, Hamlin led 45 laps and battled for the lead with Matt Kenseth late in the race before making contact with the outside wall. Damage to the #11 forced Hamlin to the garage for repair and he would ultimately finish 29th.
Texas Motor Speedway Chassis – 189 & 204: Texas will be the second race of the season for chassis 189. The car made its debut at Atlanta where Hamlin qualified 22nd and finished 15th. Chassis 204 will also be on the truck this weekend. It finished ninth at California in February.
HAMLIN CONVERSATION - TEXAS:
A big win at Martinsville and you catapult up to eighth place in the standings. Can you carry over the momentum to Texas?: "I think for this team it will be much more about the confidence we gained from the win. We've running good all season but just haven't been putting together full races. Little incidents here or there have cost us, but they've been made worse by the fact we've been running well. We just need to get back to the kind of consistency we've had over the past two seasons. That's what we're striving for and that's what we'll look to continue at Texas this weekend."
Texas is a fast, steeply banked track - How do you expect the new car to perform?: "It will depend a lot on how the tire performs, really. We've seen that this car can be a handful on these fast tracks with a hard tire. It's a balancing act for Goodyear. They are told to bring a tire that can last but we are always looking for grip. It will be a challenge every time we go to a new track with this car but we're learning a lot and applying it across all of our teams. The really tough questions won't be answered until we go on track this Friday."
