DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Express Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Starting Position: 1st
What happened on your first qualifying lap?
"I just aborted turn three when I realized the first lap wasn't all that good to make sure that I was going to have a good run
coming to the white (flag). What a great run by this whole FedEx Express Toyota team. With the wind blowing, I am a little
worried that the pavement might cool off faster than it usually would. We're definitely happy starting in the top-three tomorrow
if that's where we end up."
How does it feel to win the pole at your home track?
"It feels really good and it's a good start to the weekend -- that's for sure. A pole at Richmond equals a race win anywhere else I
go -- it's a great accomplishment for our race team and it's the next closest thing to a win here. We just have to finish the deal
off on Saturday night."
Does getting the pole help you to relax more for the rest of the weekend?
"What's good about it is that we are able to perform under pressure. I knew I had pressure because my heart was beating out of
my chest during my lap. When your foot is sitting there shaking on the gas pedal, the nerves are starting to get to you. I don't
know why -- it's just a starting position for us. It's something special around this race track, you just feel at home and when you
perform well it definitely gives you that extra boost of confidence going into the weekend that you were able to get it done."
You won the last short track race of the season at Martinsville, how prepared does that make you for tomorrow?
"Good, because a lot of the similarities to this track are similar to Phoenix and a little bit of Martinsville. I think that's why you
see guys like Mark (Martin) perform so well because he was good at Phoenix. I think you'll see some of the same players up
there so we expected to run well and it gives us a big boost of confidence. I am particularly better on the short tracks than I am
on the bigger tracks. We know when we come here that we always have a shot."
What do you learn from these last trips here that will help you tomorrow night?
"It's tough to say that I've learned anything, but it's just making sure that we capitalize at the right time. We've led laps here,
but it's all been in the middle stages of the race and towards the end we weren't able to capitalize or have a bad pit stop. You
have to put yourself in the top two to three positions with about 75 laps to go. That's the only way I feel, chance wise, you're
going to have a chance to win this race because it is so hard to pass."
How much did the track change from practice to qualifying?
"The biggest thing was the track temperature went down around 15 degrees, which is really good as far as grip. I got to run out
there in the Nationwide Series qualifying and I noticed that the track had probably 50 percent more grip than it had in practice.
It seemed like we picked up that much more during Cup qualifying. This track is very weather-sensitive. When it gets hot and
sunny, it really starts to take it's toll on the rear tires and it gets really slick. These conditions were really optimum."
KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Pedigree Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Starting Position: 7th
Are you happy with your qualifying run?
"That qualifying run there tonight for the Pedigree Toyota Camry wasn't bad. The car stuck really, really well, it turned well
and exited the corner great. Way better than what we were in practice. We felt pretty good with that lap. I'm happy with it.
We'll see where that puts us. I don't know exactly where that will put us at -- probably somewhere within the top-10 -- some
sort of a good starting spot where we can go racing tomorrow night."
Is starting the race in daylight and finishing at night a concern?
"Not really because we practice during the day so we pretty much know what we've got during the day. The biggest thing is
going to be having enough adjustability built in the car at night so when we come down pit road and make adjustments during
the night we've got enough adjustability where we can do that and keep our car running up front."
Could you have used more practice?
"We probably could have, but since we didn't get it nobody else got it. It's the same for everybody. I felt like the guys made
some awesome adjustments from practice to qualifying and the car stuck better than it had all day."
Can you continue your 'hot' streak here?
"It's been neat to be able to do that but we have to keep that going here in Richmond, Virginia. So, we'll see how it runs
tomorrow night."
DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 44 UPS Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
Starting Position: 14th
Can you talk about what you struggled with in qualifying?
"It was terrible. It was bad loose - real bad loose. I'm really disappointed with that. We made a bad call there and should have
left it alone. We made a bad call and we are going to pay for that pretty bad on Saturday night, I'm afraid."
TONY STEWART, No. 20 Home Depot Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Starting Position: 15th
How was your car on your qualifying lap?
"It was nothing impressive -- we were a little too tight. Zippy (Greg Zipadelli) said he changed a bunch of stuff before the
qualifying run and wanted to make sure we were plenty tight -- we accomplished that."
What are your thoughts about Denny Hamlin earning the pole for tomorrow night?
"I know how much running good at your home track means to you. For him to go out and put that run down, that's a great lap
for him."
DAVE BLANEY, No. 22 Caterpillar Toyota Camry, Bill Davis Racing
Starting Position: 17th
How did your car change from practice to qualifying?
"The car was really good in practice. We were really happy with it. I thought we were fine -- I probably played it real cautious
there. You can't take chances when you're in our position. The car was probably capable of going quicker than that, but that's
all we needed to do. The car was better than that lap. Looking forward to tomorrow -- that's the best car we've had this year."
What do you think about Richmond?
"Richmond is a good track. We ran pretty good here the last few years. It's a pretty fun race track. It's wide and there are
multiple grooves you can run on -- anytime it's like that the drivers like it."
AJ ALLMENDINGER, No. 84 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team
Starting Position: 18th
Can you talk about getting into the race for tomorrow night and your qualifying run?
"It was pretty solid. I think the car is really good in race trim. In qualifying and practice we really couldn't get any speed out of
it, which was frustrating because I think we were about third quickest overall in race trim. The guys did a good job. They made
a few changes. Probably could have got a little bit more out of it. I knew the first lap felt pretty good -- just tried to get a little
bit more out of it the second lap. Overall, I'm pleased with it."
MICHAEL WALTRIP, No. 55 NAPA Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
Starting Position: 27th
How did your car change from practice to qualifying?
"I'm pretty disappointed in my second lap -- we had a decent first lap, but that second lap I just over-shot turn one and got
sideways. Still ran faster, but left a lot of speed out there. We had a really good practice and I hate that I screwed that up, but I
feel real confident about tomorrow night."
MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 00 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
Starting Position: 29th
What did you struggle with on your qualifying lap?
"I think we have a pretty good race car. We were too free there for qualifying, but I think everything will play out in the race
tomorrow night. I'm a little disappointed and it's just tough because the track cools off and picks up and it's my first time here
so it's hard to know how much to get. I'm a little disappointed, but I think it's going to be like that for a while."
What do you think of Richmond?
"It's a lot of fun and the Aaron's Dream Machine was really good in practice -- it felt really good in the long runs. I don't think
any of the places are easy to get around especially when you push this hard to try to be competitive. It's one of those things
where you have to push it pretty hard and it's just finding that limit without pushing too hard."
BRIAN VICKERS, No. 83 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team
Starting Position: 32nd
Can you talk about being the first car out to qualify?
"We needed more of a pick up, but I think the guys did a good job on the car. Going out first really hurt us -- the 44 (David
Reutimann) was supposed to go out first, but he didn't show up at the car and he was on the five minute clock so he got to go out
second. We definitely learned our lesson there and next time I am first, I just won't show up because I will still have five
minutes. I'm really happy with our car in race trim."
Can you talk about being 15th in points and trying to work your way into the top-12?
"I think consistency is going to be the key and so far we have done a good job of doing that and being there week in and week
out at different race tracks. Some tracks we haven't been as good as others. It's definitely going to be important to keep that
pace up, but not only being consistent, but also having good runs. You can't consistently run 30th and get in the 'Chase'. You
have to consistently run up front."
J.J. YELEY, No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota Camry, Hall of Fame Racing
Starting Position: 43rd
