Subway Fresh Fit 500 - Rookie Qualifying Quotes

Where the Raybestos Rookies will start at Phoenix:
Franchitti 21st
McDowell 29th
Hornish Jr. 31st
Carpentier 37th
Smith 38th

REGAN SMITH, No. 01 DALE EARNHARDT, INC./PRINCIPAL CHEVROLET: “We definitely wanted a better lap than that. It was better than we had been all day but we’ve been pretty much junk all day, too [laughs]. We’ll just keep working on it. We’re getting there with it. We were a little closer that time than what we have been. We picked up almost four-and-a-half tenths from practice. Just need another three-tenths in race trim now [smiles].” WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SO DIFFICULT? “I don’t know. I haven’t qualified outside of the top-five the past five times I’ve been here so I don’t know what makes it so difficult this time.” YOU TESTED EARLIER THIS WEEK AT INFINEON RACEWAY. “Sonoma was good. I just wanted to go out there and see the track again and get familiar with the shifting points and stuff like that. I accomplished what we wanted to accomplish out there and looking forward to going back there. I like that place. I enjoy that place.”

DARIO FRANCHITTI IN THE No. 40 WRIGLEY’S JUICY FRUIT DODGE WAS THE TOP RAYBESTOS ROOKIE QUALIFIER AT PHOENIX.

Notes:

  • Franchitti will start 21st in Saturday night’s race at Phoenix. This is Franchitti’s best qualifying effort in seven-career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
  • All five Raybestos Rookies entered qualified for the Subway Fresh Fit 500.

FRANCHITTI: “After last week it feels really good. The guys on the 40 team did a great job all week. It was a pretty bad week for us not getting in the show last weekend. Everybody pulled together and the whole organization did an amazing job. That’s what teams are all about and we’re in the show so I’m pretty happy about that. We’re all in this together. Last week was a tough one as I said but everyone on the team pulled in one direction and that’s what we need. This year is going to be difficult, a learning year. I’m really proud of my guys today. It was good to get the Juicy Fruit car in the show.” DID THE LAPS YOU GOT TODAY IN THE NATIONWIDE CAR HELP YOU IN CUP QUALIFYING? “Did it help, yeah, I think it did because of the order we did things in. We did the Nationwide car first and then I go in the Cup car so I already had some experience. We tested as well with the Cup car so it really helped. I think what really helped today was the team pulled as one and we did what we had to do. That’s what you need. A difficult week last week and we’re in the show now, well in the show. As I said to the guys I think there was even more in the Juicy Fruit Dodge but I got blinded by the sun.” HOW BIG OF A DIFFERENCE DID THE TEST MAKE HERE TODAY? “Well for me right now it makes a difference because I can look at data and I’m used to working with data. That helps and like I said I can talk to my teammates about what they did and all those kind of things so that really, really helped us a lot. But really as I say the big thing today was the team such a fantastic giving me a good car.”

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 00 AARON’S DREAM MACHINE TOYOTA: “We got to get better at this. I mean, it’s not the team it’s me. I just need to qualify better, which is really frustrating because qualifying has always been my strong suit. It’s just so tough. These are the best teams and the best drivers in the world but the Aaron’s Dream Machine was all right. We just have to get a little bit more out of it.” HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO QUALIFY HERE? “I mean, it’s tough. We all know how tough it is for everybody and there’s no slouches out here. It’s just frustrating. You want to run better. Everybody does. I just want to thank all the guys at Michael Waltrip Racing. I set them back at the shop this week because of that car but we’ll keep plugging away. We have a good race car.”

SAM HORNISH, JR., No. 77 MOBIL 1 DODGE: “Pretty bad. We’re not really happy with that. We did our first practice qualifying run in practice and we were really happy with it and then we’ve tried to make adjustments but we couldn’t get the car back to where we were at and we couldn’t make it any better. It’s a little bit frustrating right now Obviously we’re in between Kurt and Ryan but we’ve got figure out how to get a little bit closer to where Ryan’s at. The car, you just can’t keep it turning in the middle of the corner and every time we try to free it up there we just seem to get a little looser in or off. We’ll have our work cut out for us tomorrow but the Mobil 1 Dodge team has been pretty good about getting the setups right for the race. Hopefully we’ll just make wise decisions tomorrow and continue to move forward.” WAS THE TRACK SLICK DURING QUALIFYING? “It is a little bit slick but not as bad as it looked. I screwed up the first lap and went in a little bit too deep down there then I had to be a little bit more conservative on the second lap just because we didn’t have a good lap. I had to try to take what we good enough. I think we had another tenth in the car but it still doesn’t put us where we need to be.”

PATRICK CARPENTIER, No. 10 LIFELOCK DODGE: “This morning I had some difficulty with the brakes and I didn’t mention it. It was kind of my fault there. I had a feeling like I was going to regret it and I thought about something else and forgot about it and I thought it would be okay. But when I got into corner one I had no brakes. The pedal just went straight. I missed that corner and in a panic went into three and four really hard and got loose and didn’t come out on the exit so that screwed my second lap up. And then I braked a little bit earlier on the second lap because I didn’t know what was going to happen and then the brake worked so I slowed myself down way too much. Basically the whole thing was just screwed up. We got the LifeLock car in the race their first weekend so I’m happy and the car was good. I tell you, I’ve been lucky to have a good car like that, especially here, because I don’t think would have made the race so at least the car was pretty good so that was good.”
