This is Hamlin’s second top-five and third top-10 finish in three Gatorade Duels at Daytona.
This marks the first visit to Victory Lane by a Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Dale Jarrett and John Andretti raced their way into the 50th Daytona 500. Jarrett has won the Daytona 500 three times. Andretti has not been in the Daytona 500 since 2005.
The non-guaranteed drivers who made the Daytona 500 today are Brian Vickers, Kenny Wallace, Kurt Busch, Dale Jarrett, John Andretti, Joe Nemechek and David Reutimann.
Dale Jr. Wins Duel No. 1; Wallace, Vickers in Daytona 500
Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his second consecutive race this week at Daytona, winning the first Gatorade Duel at Daytona qualifying race at the Daytona International Speedway in a green-white-checkered shootout. This is Earnhardt's third career Duel win, his previous two Gatorade Duel victories came in 2003 and 2004.
This is Earnhardt’s ninth top-five finish in nine Gatorade Duels. His worst finish in the event is fourth (2000).
Earnhardt also won the 2008 Budweiser Shootout last Saturday at Daytona. No driver has ever completed the Budweiser Shootout, Gatorade Duel and Daytona 500 sweep.
Kenny Wallace and Brian Vickers are the two drivers who were able to transfer into the 50th running of the Daytona 500 from the first Gatorade Duel.
This is Wallace’s first Daytona 500 start since 2005. Vickers last started in the Daytona 500 in 2006.
The No. 21 Wood Brothers car driven by Bill Elliott did not make the 2008 Daytona 500 field, which is only the third time it failed to make the Great Ameriocan Race. The other two years were 1960 and 1962.
