REGAN SMITH IN THE No. 01 COORS LIGHT CHEVROLET WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE IN TODAY’S AUTO CLUB 500.

Notes:

  • Smith claimed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the first time this season. He was credited with a 31st-place finish.
  • HISTORY MAKING POINTS RACE: For the first time in NASCAR’s modern era, THREE drivers are UNOFFICIALLY tied for the lead in the Raybestos Rookie standings in the Sprint Cup Series. Smith, Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish Jr. all have 20 points entering next week’s race at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway.
  • DID YOU KNOW? By leading the Auto Club 500 once for one lap, Franchitti became the first Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap in the Sprint Cup Series this season. He was one of 15 different drivers to lead the race. He is the first Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap in the Auto Club 500 since J.J. Yeley led once for two laps in 2006.

SMITH: “I think we learned a lot. We tried some stuff that I just couldn’t run like some of our teammates could run, setup-wise. We’re going to go back to Vegas and I felt like we were decent leaving there, do our own thing and work on our own thing and go from there. It was not what we wanted for a good performance. We got a gift on the Raybestos Rookie points there, basically. You don’t want it like that but until we get going here and get this car figured out we’ll take it. It is what it is at that point, you know. We’re going to work hard to make sure we get better.” YOU WERE IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION BECAUSE YOU HAD LIMITED TRACK TIME THIS WEEKEND AND TOTALLY DIFFERENT WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR THE RACE. “That doesn’t help at all but we just didn’t perform today. I’m not going to use practice as an excuse because there were 40-some other cars that didn’t have practice either and they got it figured out. We’re going to work hard at it and get this thing where I need it to be able to go fast and be able to be competitive in the pack and go from there.”

DARIO FRANCHITTI, No. 40 TARGET DODGE: HOW MUCH DID YOU LEARN TODAY THAT WILL HELP YOU IN THE FUTURE? “I learned a lot. I think we went through a lot of different conditions over last night and today and just getting used to racing the cars as well. We were looking good for a top-30 there and we think we dropped a valve with five to go. We ended up with a huge misfire with five laps to go and dropped three places. That was kind of unfortunate because the Target Dodge was not too bad. As I say, we probably would have got a top-30 out of it and learned a bunch. Just getting used to how slick the tracks are and how much the cars move around still.”
