Centurion Boats at the Glen - Team Red Bull Notes

TEAM RED BULL
WATKINS GLEN INTERNATIONAL
CENTURION BOATS AT THE GLEN

ENTRIES: Red Bull No. 83 Brian Vickers and Red Bull No. 84 AJ Allmendinger
RACE: NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, “Centurion Boats at the Glen”
TRACK: Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen, NY
DATES: August 10-12, 2007

+ ON THE ROAD AGAIN AT THE GLEN
A July 31 research-gathering mission took Red Bull Racing across the North Carolina state line to the tiny southern Virginia town called Alton. There, Red Bull Racing puts is road-course package to the test at Virginia International Raceway. The scenic 2.27-mile circuit is not on the Nextel Cup schedule, but it becomes a hotbed for stock cars when events roll around like this weekend’s at Watkins Glen International.

Brian Vickers’ No. 83 Red Bull Toyota completed 85 laps (193 miles) during the test. AJ Allmendinger’s No. 84 traversed VIR 72 times (165 miles). Should the testing pay off in qualifying, they’ll be required to turn 90 laps in Sunday’s Centurion Boats at The Glen.

Seven of Watkins Glen’s 11 turns are classified as right-handers. Heck, even the entrance to pit road is a right-hand turn — an art AJ perfected in his road- and street-circuit days driving open-wheel single seaters. BV, who grew up knowing nothing but ovals, is no slouch on a road course, either. In 2005 at Watkins Glen, he finished third in the Busch Series race and a day later ran eighth in the Cup car.

+ QUOTES
Brian Vickers, No. 83 driver - “As a team, we have done some good road-course testing since Infineon and learned a lot that will help us this weekend. I know we have a good package and good equipment — let’s just hope it is enough to get us in the race. Until we are locked into the top 35 in points, our main focus every weekend has to still be on qualifying. The goal for Sunday is to get a strong, solid finish so we can keep gaining ground in the points.”

Doug Richert, No. 83 crew chief - “We hope to achieve the same comfortable balance this weekend that we had when we tested our road-course cars. We’ll hopefully show up at Watkins Glen a lot closer than we were at Infineon a few weeks ago. The emphasis on qualifying is still as important as it is for us every week, but we have to be more on our game because of the road-course ringers entered in the field. I have full confidence in Brian’s ability and in the equipment going into this race weekend.”

AJ Allmendinger, No. 84 driver - “Since the Infineon race a few weeks ago we have done some quality road-course testing. I definitely feel more confident coming to Watkins Glen having turned more laps in a COT on a road course. With the development we have done with these cars and what we have learned, as a team we will definitely be better prepared going into this race. I think we have a really good shot of making the race and also getting a good finish out of it. This team deserves that after all the hard work they have been putting in.”

Ricky Viers, No. 84 crew chief - “We need to bounce back strong this week — stronger than we ever have — after missing the last six races. There is no better place to do that than at a road course where AJ is most comfortable. No one on this team has ever given up, and we are behind our driver 100 percent. We plan on proving that this week.”
