Aaron's 499 - Ken Schrader Notes

WOOD BROTHERS/JTG GEARED UP FOR TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY

Wood Brothers/JTG driver Ken Schrader should be happy to see the high banks of Talladega Superspeedway once again. It was the scene of his very first of four NASCAR NEXTEL Cup victories for the veteran driver from Fenton, MO. The win came in 1988, driving for Rick Hendrick and it was a memorable day.

Talladega is known for producing many first time winners through the years such as Ron Bouchard, Bobby Hillin, Jr., Lennie Pond, Dick Brooks, Phil Parsons—and more recently, Brian Vickers. The thrill of knowing when to push it and when to be as careful as possible is never more evident at the 2.66-mile track.

Ken Schrader is bringing chassis number 67 for the No. 21 Little Debbie Ford this weekend. This same car has one pole position at the track for the Wood Brothers/JTG Organization, coming in the second Talladega event in 2004. Schrader, himself, has compiled a noteworthy personal record at Talladega with one win, six top-five finishes and 12 top-10 finishes. In 44 starts, he’s led 155 laps of the “freight train” variety commonly seen through the tri-oval.

The Wood Brothers/JTG race team will once again have to qualify on speed, as they are just outside the top-35 cut off margin, but with the car they intend to bring and a driver who has seen victory lane, hopefully it will just be the formality it has been for the past three weeks.

WHAT THE TEAM HAS TO SAY
Ken Schrader, driver of the No. 21 Little Debbie Ford:
“I told the guys last week after qualifying that this week was more or less up to them and the car. And I think we all know it’s a great chassis with a good body hung on it. We’ll worry ourselves a little bit on Friday, but I think we’ll be ok. The rest of the weekend is all about seeing what the car will do in traffic. Where does it run well? Who will it run well behind or in front of? It’s a puzzle that every driver has to solve and we don’t have much time to figure it out. And once you do figure it out, then you have to stay out of trouble all day long. This is a place where you don’t uncross your fingers all weekend long.”

Ernie Cope, Crew Chief of the No. 21 Little Debbie Ford:
“This car we’re bringing is a capable one and it has a pretty good record. I’ll just say we’ll hold up our end of the bargain and see if the car will do its part for us all weekend. I just hope it’s a safe weekend for everyone involved.”
