+ UNDER THE STARS
The Car of Tomorrow (COT) takes the track once again this weekend – but this time it’s at night under the bright lights of Phoenix International. The 1-mile, slightly-banked track with a dogleg obstacle betweens turns 2 and 3, has always been kind to Brian. In six career starts, he has an average starting position of 5.3 and average finishing position of 14.3. AJ plans to continue his love affair with the COT and its wing. So far this season he has made every COT race he has entered.
+ SUNNY FORECAST
Coming off a solid 14th place finish in Texas, the No. 83 team once again proved that they can run with the big dogs and be competitive every time they make a race. Brian skillfully maneuvered his car through the field all day racking up the most green flag passes of any other car in the race with 78 total. Also noteworthy – he was the only Toyota to finish on the lead lap. The Top 15 finish helped the team inch a bit closer to the ever-elusive Top 35 in owner points. Unfortunately, AJ never got a chance to show what his car could do – a car he called the best he had driven all year – thanks to some nasty weather and tornados that cancelled last Friday’s qualifying. The forecast calls for sun, so the Red Bull Racing drivers will at least get a chance this weekend to improve their golf score.
+ QUOTES
Brian Vickers, driver No. 83 – “I'm pretty pumped about racing at Phoenix. Phoenix in some ways will be similar to Martinsville because braking is important to keep the car turning on the flat track. Some of the same knowledge working with the COT on the two tracks will apply, but at the end of the day, each track has a different car setup. Phoenix has always been one of my best qualifying tracks - four out of the last six times I've been there I've qualified in the top five - so I hope to keep that streak alive.”
Doug Richert, crew chief No. 83 – “This is our first run in the Car of Tomorrow on a track that's longer than a half-mile, so we're going to be up against some new challenges this weekend. We had a good run at Bristol in the COT but just missed the field at Martinsville the next week. Rebounding for a 14th place finish last weekend shows that we can bounce back quickly, so we'll take that momentum and positive thinking and carry it with us to Phoenix.”
AJ Allmendinger, driver No. 84 – “The Richmond test a couple of weeks ago was a great one for the team, and we are taking the same car this weekend to Phoenix. I do not have any actual experience racing at Phoenix, but I have owned it several times in my online league races! Hopefully that will bode well for us.”
Ricky Viers, crew chief No. 84 – “No storms and tornadoes are in the forecast for the weekend, so we will definitely be ready to qualify Friday. We worked really hard on our short track stuff at the Richmond test. It was actually one of the better practices we have had all year. We were 7th fastest of the go-or-go-home cars, so I’m confident that what we accomplished there will lead to success this weekend.”
