NEW HAMPSHIRE PREVIEW
MOST RECENT RACE AT NEW HAMPSHIRE: Jeff Green matched his season-best finish with a sixth-place result in the July 1 NEXTEL Cup Series race at New Hampshire International Speedway.
After qualifying 15th, the Haas CNC Racing team used a decisive pit strategy to earn the top-10 result. Crew chief Harold Holly elected to only change right side tires during the final pit stop with 46 laps remaining. The speedy pit work moved Green up to the fourth position when the race restarted and Green was able to hold on to finish sixth.
ONE YEAR AGO: In the Sept., 2006, NEXTEL Cup Series race at New Hampshire International Speedway, Jeff Green completed just two laps before trouble struck on the front stretch of the 1.058-mile speedway.
Green was running in the outside line of cars when the No. 5 car, driven by Kyle Busch, moved up in front of Green’s No. 66. Green made contact with the right rear of Busch’s machine, causing Green to lose control and slide down the track before making hard contact with the inside retaining wall.
The accident severely damaged both the front and rear of Green’s car, which had to be loaded onto a wrecker. Green and his team were out of the event less than 10 minutes after the race began, and finished 43rd.
CHASSIS- HAAS CNC RACING CHASSIS NO. 450 – In what was this car’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series debut, Jeff Green drove chassis No. 450 to a 23rd-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway in late August.
Q&A WITH DRIVER JEFF GREEN:
You’re headed to another short track this weekend. What do you do to get back in the groove and get another top-10 finish? “Well, it’s no secret that our qualifying is what’s cost us the past few weeks – actually, it’s held us back for most of the year. Our cars are fast in race trim, but starting that far back really ups the risk of being in an accident or getting lapped on the shorter tracks. If we can get a decent starting spot this weekend, that’s really going to be a big part of being able to finish well. Otherwise, you just have to race smart and be there at the end. If we get a chance to do another two-tire stop at the end, we might take that risk again. It worked out for us last time.”
Given your love of hunting, with hunting season getting underway, have you gotten into the woods much? “No, I really haven’t. It was so hot in Kentucky this summer, it killed a lot of the food plots we had planted on my property for the deer, so I don’t know how much that’s going to hurt our chances of getting a big deer this year. With as much testing as we’ve been doing, and some sponsor appearances we have coming up, it’s probably going to be a few weeks before I’ll be able to break away and get over there to do any hunting.”
Q&A WITH CREW CHIEF HAROLD HOLLY:
You posted a top-10 finish at New Hampshire in July. Are you taking the same setup back? – “We’re taking a similar setup back to New Hampshire, with some tweaks. It’ll be pretty close to what we had back here in July. We’re hoping to qualify better than we have in the past few COT races, though. We had a fast car at Richmond, but starting in the back really hurt.”
How was the NEXTEL Cup Series test at Talladega (Superspeedway) earlier this week? “I was really happy with the way it turned out. We didn’t do any drafting at all on the second day, which is why we weren’t higher up the leaderboard. The car was really fast on single-car runs, and we could pretty much run anywhere we wanted to on the track, so Johnny (Sauter, driver of the No. 70 Haas CNC Racing Chevrolet) and his team focused on drafting the second day, and we focused on single-car runs. That way, we got the best of both worlds and were able to gather more information.
“I didn’t really like the speeds all the cars were running overall, but the package we had was pretty fast. The COT drove really well – better than the cars we’re currently using at the bigger tracks, in fact. I think you’re going to see some three and four-wide racing all day. It should be a heck of a show.”
As far as how the COT cars will race versus the cars of today at Talladega, do you think fans will see a different style of racing? “I think you’re going to see five or 10-car breakaways where they’re running single-file, especially if the cars behind them are going three and four-wide. Then I think those cars will line up single file and catch up to the breakaway, then go three and four-wide again, and it’ll happen all over again.
“It’s going to be like a big ‘slinky’ effect. It’ll be ‘breakaway, pack chases them down, breakaway, pack chases them down,’ all day. I think you’ll see a lot of passing. The cars drive well enough and the closure rate is good enough to where you can get a good run and break out of line and make an aggressive move. It’s going to be fun to watch.”
