DATES: June 29th – July 1st, 2007
+ FIRST DAY OF NASCAR SCHOOL
This new life that AJ Allmendinger leads all started last fall at New Hampshire. It was there that AJ, thinking NASCAR racing might further his career, strapped into a Craftsman Truck for Bill Davis Racing.
At first, he was wicked bad (that’s how they talk in New England), crashing his primary truck and starting 32nd. Then, he was wicked good, finishing 13th. In truck start No. 2, he ran fifth at Talladega, and doubters suddenly became believers. It turned out to be quite the career decision, because AJ did indeed make it to Nextel Cup with Red Bull Racing.
His teammate, Brian Vickers, has a few stories of his own that originate in New Hampshire. In the No. 25, BV stole a pole (June, 2005) and barely missed winning the September race last season, ending up fifth.
+ QUOTES
Brian Vickers, No. 83 driver - “New Hampshire is another flat, 1-mile track and as we showed at Phoenix and Martinsville, we seem to struggle with the COT on 1-mile race tracks. We're hoping that won't be the case this weekend though. New Hampshire and Martinsville are similar with tight turns and long straightaways so hopefully we at least learned at
Martinsville what not to do during qualifying! It's so different when you're outside the top 35. All you can think about is qualifying. Once you get into the race, you can switch over to race mode, but until then, it's all about turning a fast lap when it counts."
Doug Richert, No. 83 crew chief – “We're taking a brand new race car to Loudon that we've done some testing with, but haven't raced on any track this year. New Hampshire and Martinsville are similar flat tracks, and they're both tracks where we're racing the Car of Tomorrow, so we're hoping the qualifying package we'll run at New Hampshire will fare better for us than Martinsville where we didn't make the race. Loudon could prove to be a turning point for us with our COT program, since we haven't had much success with it yet this season."
AJ Allmendinger, No. 84 driver - “I raced my very first NASCAR race at New Hampshire last fall in the #24 Bill Davis truck. I was comfortable right away on the track - it's just a cool track to get around. I guess it suits my driving style. As a team, we just want to forget about last weekend's missed race and move forward and hopefully get our first top-25 this weekend."
Ricky Viers, No. 84 crew chief - “This is a track where AJ has raced before and done really well, so I am excited about seeing what he can do in this Cup car. We qualified 13th back in Richmond and that is a similar, flat track as New Hampshire. We didn't do well in Phoenix, which is another similar track, but this team has learned a lot and come a long way since then. We are going to capitalize on what we learned in the Milwaukee test two weeks ago and what we learned racing in Richmond to bring home a solid finish this weekend. This is a good opportunity for us to bounce back after missing the Infineon road course race last weekend."
