WOOD BROTHERS/JTG TEAM PICKS UP STEAM EN ROUTE TO THE MAGIC MILE
New Hampshire International Speedway Preview
Following a season-best finish of 11th two weeks ago and a dramatic fuel mileage gamble that turned into a 19th place run on Sunday—the past two weeks have seen some measurable momentum for the Wood Brothers/JTG race team. Slowly but surely, the No. 21 Little Debbie gang is clawing their way back into the top-35 in owner points, as they’ve managed to chop their overall deficit in half with their two most recent finishes. The team is now only 159 points out of the cutoff point and they’ve advanced two positions to 38th overall in the rankings. With the team making steady progress, hopes remain high as they head to the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon for the Lenox Tools 300 this Sunday.
Driver Bill Elliott has 19 starts at the one-mile oval, dubbed the “Magic Mile”. He has garnered two top-five finishes and four top-10’s along the way, in addition to one Bud Pole Award coming in the 2002 season.
In preparation for this week’s event, the crew had the team transporter drive directly from Sonoma to the Milwaukee Mile for a two-day shakedown run of their two cars on Tuesday and Wednesday. The team sent a second car hauler to meet the group and exchange the road course vehicles previously used this weekend in Sonoma. The team will leave for Loudon, New Hampshire as scheduled on Thursday of this week, following the test.
The team has chosen to bring COT Chassis C-5 as the primary No. 21 Little Debbie Ford. This car was previously used in both Bristol and Dover events earlier this year.
WHAT THE TEAM HAS TO SAY
Bill Elliott, driver of the No. 21 Little Debbie Ford:
“With what we’ve been able to accomplish lately, I can see some things coming together. We have a few things I think we can build on now, under out belts, and it’s up to all of us to keep this thing going forward. We’re closer now than two weeks ago and hopefully we’ll be even closer come Sunday night. I’ve seen just how hard all of these guys work and I owe it to them to drive as hard as I can to get this deal turned around. I think we’re on our way.”
Michael McSwain, Crew Chief of the No. 21 Little Debbie Ford:
“I think we’ve got an approach now to where we don’t want to take any unnecessary chances in the way that we prepare. I think it’s hard on the guys to turn around and test after a West Coast swing, but we need to shake these cars down and make sure we give Bill what he needs. He’ll get it done for you if you can get it right---or pretty close. We’re seeing things slowly creep over to the good side right now and I don’t want to lose what momentum we have.”
