EXPRESS NOTES:
Hamlin Tenth at Infineon: Denny Hamlin and the #11 FedEx Racing team battled back from deep on the grid Sunday in Sonoma County to record the team’s tenth top-ten finish of the season, and keep Hamlin solidly in second place in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup standings.
Hamlin Wears His Heart on His Helmet in New Hampshire: Hamlin will be sporting a helmet designed for him by 13-year old Children’s Hospital Boston patient Moira Welch this weekend at New Hampshire. Hamlin will visit the hospital on Thursday, June 28 to meet with patients and staff, be presented with the special helmet and deliver a donation from FedEx in the amount of $25,000. Hamlin also will race R/C cars with the patients, and all of the patients will have an opportunity to design their own mini-FedEx Racing helmet.
The helmet presented to Hamlin in Boston, and worn at New Hampshire International this weekend, will be the fifth of eleven helmets designed by children’s hospital patients and children granted wishes through the Make-A-Wish program as part of the 2007 FedEx “Wear Your Heart on Your Helmet” program. All eleven race-worn helmets will be displayed and auctioned off at the end of the season to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp.
Hamlin Close at New Hampshire: This will be Hamlin’s third start at NHIS in a Nextel Cup car. In the July race last season, Hamlin settled for sixth place as he ran of out fuel on the way to the checkered flag. While sitting in second place, a bizarre caution-lap wreck saw Hamlin run out of fuel and lose his chance to challenge eventual winner Kyle Busch for the win. In the first race of the 2006 Chase for the Nextel Cup, Hamlin led four laps and once again looked to have a shot at wining before setting for fourth on the day. The effort set Hamlin and the #11 team on course for success that would carry them through the Chase.
FedEx Express Fact: Hamlin has led laps in six of seven Car of Tomorrow races this season. Including the three laps he led last weekend at Infineon Raceway, Hamlin has now led 566 laps (22% of all possible) in the Car of Tomorrow.
Infineon Raceway Chassis – JGR 162 & 154: The #11 team will roll out chassis 162 this weekend for 300 laps at NHIS. Hamlin drove this COT to the pole at Martinsville, then lead 125 laps before taking the checkered in third. Backup chassis 154 has made three starts this season, recording finishes of 14th (Bristol), 3rd (Phoenix) and 3rd (Richmond).
QUOTES
Hamlin on New Hampshire International: “This track has been pretty good to this #11 FedEx team so far. I feel really comfortable at New Hampshire, and that’s because I can really feel what the car is doing, and what it wants to do there. It comes down to being able to roll through the corners and get back on the throttle as soon as possible, and that’s where we’ve been good. It's definitely a little bit different than any other track we go to because it almost seems like it's banked in the other direction on the bottom. But you can go way up high or run on the bottom so there are some options for you to find a fast line.
We’ve had some success in the COT so far this season and we expect that will help us going to New Hampshire. We feel like we missed some chances to win races in the COT because we ran so well at Phoenix, Martinsville and Darlington but just didn’t lead the lap that matters most. We hope that all we have learned so far this season will help us this weekend, and even though it seems all of the teams are getting a better feel for the COT, we think that, even without the wins to show for it, what we have at JGR is still really competitive so I would expect all three JGR teams to go out there and be really fast.”
