Subway 500 - Kyle Busch Notes

PREVIEW: KYLE BUSCH (NO. 5 KELLOGG'S/CARQUEST IMPALA SS)
VENUE: MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY (.526-MILE OVAL)
CIRCUIT: NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES (RACE 32 OF 36)
EVENT: SUNDAY, OCT. 21, 2007 (500 LAPS, 263 MILES)

MID-CHASE REPORT CARD: With five races of the 2007 Chase for the NEXTEL Cup complete, driver Kyle Busch sits sixth in the championship standings. Scoring his third top-five finish of the Chase at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Busch is now 280 points back of leader Jeff Gordon. Saturday night's third-place result at LMS also buffed up Busch's record for the 2007 season to nine top-five finishes and 17 top-10s. It was Busch's first top-five effort at Lowe's in eight Cup attempts.

STOUT AT MARTINSVILLE: In five starts at Martinsville Speedway, Busch has accumulated two top-five finishes and three top-10s. He has an average finishing position of 15th and has earned the eighth-best driver rating (93.2). Busch has made 117 quality passes of top-15 cars under green, which is the second-most of current drivers at the .526-mile track.

BUSCH ON 'TRACKSIDE LIVE': Busch will make an appearance Friday evening on SPEED Channel's "Trackside Live" show to discuss Martinsville and his Chase prospects. He will appear alongside host Steve Byrnes, fellow NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler, and former crew chiefs Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond. It's Busch's first appearance on this show this season.

'423' BACK AGAIN: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 423 as the primary Impala SS for this weekend's NEXTEL Cup race at Martinsville. The car most recently saw action last month at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, where it finished 20th.

DOUBLE DUTY: Busch will race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for Billy Ballew Motorsports this weekend at Martinsville, where he has earned fifth- and sixth-place finishes over the past two seasons. Busch has entered six truck events thus far this season, collecting one top-five finish and leading a total of 117 laps. To round out the 2007 season, Busch plans to enter the NCTS events at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S/CARQUEST IMPALA SS: (ON HIS CURRENT POINTS POSITION.) "Even though it was a great weekend for us (at Lowe's Motor Speedway), and we finished third, we still didn't gain much in the points. Jeff Gordon is on fire right now, and the Chase is turning into a three-man battle. We're not giving up by any stretch, but it's amazing that we finished third and the gap widened."

BUSCH: (ON WALKING THE TRACK AT MARTINSVILLE.) "I had an appearance at Martinsville in late August and was able to actually walk around the track with media and show them braking points as well as dissect the track for them. It was cool to be able to show that to the media up close, without 42 other cars flying around you at the same time. It's a challenge, and I hope they were able to see that and appreciate what we go through as drivers."

BUSCH: (ON THE DIFFICULTY OF MARTINSVILLE.) "My first race at Martinsville was tough as a rookie. The past few races I've done really well there. You have to qualify decent because there are only a handful of good pits. During the race, you have to move around a lot and search for a better line where your car works better and I think we've learned how to do that. Jeff (Gordon), Jimmie (Johnson) and Denny Hamlin have all been good there. They finish first, second and third, and we usually finish around fifth. We just need to get a little bit better."

BUSCH: (ON THE DIFFERENT RACING IN THE CAR OF TOMORROW.) "There was a difference with the Car of Tomorrow in the last Martinsville race. They are harder to pass with and the race groove ended up spreading out to be single file. With the old car, we would be on top of each other the entire time, but this car has bred a new type of racing."

BUSCH: (ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR THIS WEEKEND.) "There will be a lot of single-file racing and guys knocking each other out of the way. There will be a ton of pit strategy, and qualifying up front will be important. Track position is going to be key."
