As rain continued to fall this morning at Michigan International Speedway, Donnie Wingo took time to discussed the various repercussions of the delay. Wingo is crew chief for leading Raybestos Rookie driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
DONNIE WINGO, CREW CHIEF, No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE: HOW FRUSTRATING IS IT TO BE SITTING HERE IN THE RAIN FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE DAY? “It just puts everything behind when you’ve got so many people here because we’ve got a lot of people here that’s normally back at the shop working and it just kind of puts everything behind. Actually we had a test planned for today and tomorrow at St. Louis, which it’s raining there, so we cancelled that. It’s just trying to get everything back and get ready to go to Bristol and Fontana.”
HOW MANY YEARS HAS IT BEEN SINCE YOU FACED THE POSSIBILITY OF A RAINOUT ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY? “It’s been a long time since we’ve had that and it looks like today, from everything I’ve seen is going to be a washout. Hopefully we’ll go ahead and stay until tomorrow and get it over with. If not, I don’t know what the plans will be.”
IS THERE A GOOD PLAN OR GOOD OPTION? “The best option I think, you’ve got everybody here now you might as well get it over with and get it run. Hopefully that’s what they’re going to do. I think that’s what their plans are and if we can get it in tomorrow it’ll be a whole lot better than trying to come up here Monday or whatever after one of these Saturday night races we’ve got. We’ve got one of our guys jacking the 40 car [David Stremme] now since they’ve lost their jackman. That’s kind of our go to guy at the shop, which kind of puts us behind on that. So with everybody being here it does put everything behind at the shop. But I’ve talked the guys at the shop. We’ve still got four guys back working on our stuff, just giving them things to get buttoned-up to make sure it’s done that we don’t have any issues when we get back as far as getting the Bristol car finished. They’re actually working on the Fontana car and that’s what I’m doing now, sending the Fontana setup to them.”
HOW FAR COULD YOU PUSH A RAINOUT HERE AND STILL MAKE IT TO BRISTOL ON TIME? “I think we could actually run it Wednesday, just so we could get out of here at a decent time Wednesday,
get it started early Wednesday morning or something like that. But I mean it’s going to push everything to get to Bristol on time if they stay until Wednesday. Our Bristol stuff is pretty much done, it’s just the fact of getting back and getting everything buttoned-up, get the trucks swapped around. And plus some of our parts are in St. Louis for Bristol.”
HOW MUCH WILL THIS AFFECT YOUR SETUP WHEN YOU GO RACING HERE? “I think it’s going to change the setup a lot. Most of the time here when we get rain like this until they get some rubber down I feel like the cars are going to be really, really loose. Normally that’s what happens here. NASCAR said in their meeting yesterday they were going to have a caution at 25 laps so that’ll give us a chance to see kind of how much we need to adjust the car and then later on how much we’ll have to adjust it as it goes on.”
HOW MUCH BETTER ARE YOU FOR THIS RACE VERSUS JUNE? “I think we’re a lot better than we were. I know we qualified better but everything has been a lot smoother, his feel for this place, his line, knowing what the car needs, it’s been a lot better so far.”
