UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 - Ford Qualifying Quotes
MATT KENSETH – No. 17 DeWalt Ford Fusion (qualified 39th) – HOW MUCH HAS THIS TRACK CHANGED? “It’s a lot different. It’s similar to Chicago, when they first did it, a little bit to Texas. It’s just really, really, really treacherous out there. The Busch cars are worse. They gave us a real old tire on the Busch car and they’re very hard to control. These cars a little easier, but not much. It’s just a handful. The tire’s real hard for the surface, and it’s hard to get a grip.”
JON WOOD – No. 21 U.S. Air Force Ford Fusion (qualified 49th) – ARE YOU HAPPY TO HAVE QUALIFYING BEHIND YOU SO CAN LOOK FORWARD SOLELY TO YOUR FIRST CUP RACE? “Yeah. I’m frustrated with the way qualifying went because, obviously, we’re much better than that, we were in practice. I guess it’s to be expected when I put as much pressure as I put on myself, leaving no room for error and then having a couple by making a couple of mistakes. The main, and important, thing is I’m already in the race, and we’ll race well.” SO WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND? “Just making it drive good. I’ve got to finish, and I’ve got to get a decent finish. It’s all we’re worried about. Points are crucial right now, so getting points is what we need.”
RICKY RUDD – No. 88 Snickers Ford Fusion (qualified 43rd) – “We’re just a day late, playing catch-up. We were really good in the test, we’re real disappointed that they changed the tire around. It just took us a little bit to get back from that. We made big gains on that, but we’re about a day behind right now.” DOES THE NEW TRACK CAUSE ANY PARTICULAR PROBLEMS? “I like it. I think that what they did with the track needed to be done. What they’ve done with the track, to me, it’s made a lot more grip. It’s going to make the set-ups a little more forgiving on race day because the banking tends to overcome some of the issues if a guy misses the set-up a little bit.”
JAMIE McMURRAY – No. 26 Crown Royal – Ford Fusion (qualified 33rd) – “We brought a brand-new car here, and really struggled off the truck with it. We just drug a bunch of stuff. We just had a very tough day, so we just sort of threw something at it for qualifying, and it was way better, so everybody did a good job on making the right adjustments. It’s just a crapshoot, it seems like, when you get to these places and you’re hitting front springs, to figure out what you need to do, but we made the right decisions today. And even though it’s not great, it’s a big difference from where we were in practice.”
DAVID GILLILAND – No. 38 M&M’s Ford Fusion (qualified 21st) – WHAT HAPPENED? “The car was just super loose, and Id rove down the first lap and it got free and I kind of had to back-pedal and I thought, ‘Okay, we’ll try and do it on our second lap,’ and just got down in three and four and it just came around. It was a little too free, I guess.” WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE BACK-UP CAR? “We tested both cars here and both cars were very, very fast, so I feel good about our chances.”
GREG BIFFLE – No. 16 Ameriquest Mortgage Ford Fusion (qualified 18th) – “We came off the truck and just couldn’t drive it at all, and then said we’re going to re-group and go to qualifying trim and then it was so tight we couldn’t even make the corner. So we chased our tails from both ends of the spectrum. Right there was pretty good.”
CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion (qualified 13th) – “Just got a good draw there and the guys did a good job with the car. It was way better than I thought it would be. It was fun.”
