Coca-Cola 600 - Rookie Saturday Quotes

RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDER ADVANCE MATERIAL FOR THE COCA-COLA 600 NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES RACE AT LOWE’S MOTOR SPEEDWAY, MAY 26, 2007.

DONNIE WINGO, CREW CHIEF, No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE: COMMENT ON THE CAR OF TOMORROW BEING FULLY IMPLEMENTED IN 2008. “It’s good to know, from the standpoint of you’re not still trying to develop these cars like we’re running here at Charlotte, our normal cars. So you’re not going through trying to develop them but we still have more races with them this year so we can’t give that up because it’s just as many points in the COT races. But it kind of turns your focus in making sure that you’ve got more COT cars built for next year instead of building normal downforce cars like we’re running here at Charlotte and Michigan and those places. We’ll be focusing more on getting more COT cars built and developing the COT car a little bit more, but we’ve still got to maintain these cars and still develop them to a certain point but it won’t be at the point to where we’re testing them wind tunnel, aero testing a lot with those.” HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A SEASON WHERE YOU’VE HAD THE CHALLENGE OF WORKING BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF CARS? “Naw, never where it’s been like this. This has been a big challenge. I mean, it really has. It’s such a big difference. It’s such a big difference from these cars that you can travel a lot more than the COT cars, even though we’ve got bump stops and you’re not coil binding. But it’s still one of those deals to where it’s a challenge just to get the cars to work without traveling like we need to travel. So I mean you’re basically working on a lot of geometry things because the aero is pretty much 90 percent locked in. You can’t make changes with that. The only thing you can make changes with is attitude-wise to the car to help change the aero some.” HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR RACE TEAM FRESH AND FOCUSED FOR THE END OF THE SEASON? “It’s been tough. It really has. I think after next week is over with, I think it’ll be either nine or 10 weeks straight that I’ve raced and tested this year. The deal with the race team, we’re kind of fortunate enough to where we’ve got a few more people like for our test team that all these other tracks that we go to and test, non NASCAR tracks that we run at, that we’ve got another group of people that go, but essentially, a few of the other people go but most of the time it’s just me. I’ve actually went with some of the different drivers, too, just trying to learn more about this COT car. To be honest with you right now, it’s been pretty tiring. I’m probably as tired as I’ve ever been, not just physically, but mentally tired of trying to change your focus between the test and trying to get better with COT cars and then coming back here and changing focus and getting ready to run the 600.” BECAUSE OF THE RAIN DELAY AT DARLINGTON, THE DOVER TEST WAS CANCELLED. “I think there will be somewhat of an effect because basically the way we’re looking at it, is we’re going to have to go there with something similar setup-wise as far as Bristol was. So that means a bigger right-front spring than we normally run there and the only way you’re going to get that to turn is put camber in it. It’s kind of going to be a trade off. Dover is rough on blowing right-front tires so that’s a concern of mine going to Dover and not testing with everybody going and not knowing exactly what you’re going to be able to do to make the car turn and get the balance good in it. They say we’ve run Bristol and sure we have Bristol but Dover is like Bristol and steroids so it’s a little bit bigger. I think it’s going to be more of a challenge there than it was at Bristol as far as keeping the right-front tire on the car.”

RICKY VIERS, CREW CHIEF, No. 84 RED BULL TOYOTA: WILL THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CAR OF TOMORROW IN 2008 BE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE? “The only advantage it is right now really for anybody is it’s one car and you don’t have to go bouncing back from week to week. And for us trying to build cars and build a team now we can just build one type of car and focus on that one type of car. I wouldn’t really say it’s an advantage. I think it’ll be helpful for everybody. I’m looking forward to running it every week because I don’t like switching back and forth.” IT SEEMS LIKE AJ ALLENDINGER HAS ADAPTED WELL TO THE COT CARS. “We’ve tested that car quite a bit lately, before Richmond even, and we’ve gained a lot on our chassis development of that car and things we need to do to make it run faster and then obviously he’s learned a lot. All the way around we’ve just gotten better at our shop and on the road with the road crew and everything. When we come back to these tracks the second time around I think it’ll be a whole different race team and a whole different mindset for him, especially.” WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO KEEP THE TEAM FRESH AND FOCUSED? “We’ve got a really good group of guys at the shop, as far as our managers in each department and all the people that work in those departments. They do a great job preparing the cars for us so when we get back, we don’t have a tremendous amount of work to do. We don’t feel like we’re behind. We basically get our car for the following week and we basically go over the setup with our setup guys that are staying back and we nut and bolt our car. We put it on the pull down rig if we want to or seven-post or whatever we need to do to fine-tune everything. So I don’t even think we’re behind at all. I think the group that we have back at the shop has been an absolute asset to our race team to help us stay on the road and stay fresh. We’re not there just to put in hours. We’re there to get the job done. So when we get the job done, we get the truck loaded, we get out of there and go home and mow our yard and see our families and get things done there, too.”
