Allstate 400 at the Brickyard - Kyle Busch Notes

PREVIEW: KYLE BUSCH (NO. 5 CARQUEST/KELLOGG'S MONTE CARLO SS)
VENUE: INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY (2.5-MILE OVAL)
CIRCUIT: NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES (RACE 20 OF 36)
EVENT: SUNDAY, JULY 29, 2007 (160 LAPS, 400 MILES)

TESTING BRISTOL: As the most recent winner on the old pavement, Kyle Busch participated in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Busch Series and NEXTEL Cup Series tests this week at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. Busch took full advantage of the testing time to get accustomed to the brand new concrete surface at the world's fastest half-mile. He will enter all three series events there in August.

TOP-10 STREAK AT INDY: In the two races Busch has entered at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he has scored two top-10 finishes. In his rookie season, Busch cruised to a 10th-place finish and backed it up with a seventh-place effort last season.

HENDRICK STRONG AS BRICKS: Since the first NASCAR race there in 1994, Hendrick Motorsports has posted five wins at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, leading all teams. The most recent win was in 2006 with NEXTEL Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. The organization has also earned three pole positions at the historic track.

SIGN OF A CHAMPION: In six of the last nine seasons, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway winner went on to become the NEXTEL Cup champion. Jeff Gordon pulled the double for Hendrick Motorsports in 1998 and 2001, and teammate Jimmie Johnson kissed the bricks and hoisted the NEXTEL Cup last season.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PIGEON: CARQUEST/Kellogg's Chevy car chief Rick Pigeon will celebrate his 32nd birthday on Thursday. A Fairfax, Vt., native, Pigeon has worked at Hendrick Motorsports since 2001 and also spends his race days as the over-the-wall jackman for the No. 5 crew.

CAR SELECTION FOR INDIANAPOLIS: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 426 as the primary Monte Carlo SS for this weekend's NEXTEL Cup event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The car finished eighth at Pocono in June.

KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 CARQUEST/KELLOGG'S MONTE CARLO SS: (ON THE PRESTIGE OF INDIANAPOLIS.) "Some guys put so much emphasis on this race and it kind of puts added pressure on you as a driver. If you can put all that aside, you can race the track and not worry about the trophy. Jeff Gordon has won there four times and it's because he races the track. He's been there at the end. The configuration (of the track) is so different than any other place we race at, that it truly is a driver's track. Hendrick Motorsports puts a lot of emphasis on this race because you need so much motor to get down the long straightaways. It's a total team effort and I believe we can win it."

BUSCH: (ON HIS SEVENTH-PLACE FINISH AT INDY LAST YEAR.) "Last year, we could have had a better run and we were struggling a little. Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) made a great call for me to stay out on the track late in the race. I led a little, but was a sitting duck. All the guys behind me had fresh tires. We finished seventh with a 30th-place car. It's all about the finishes. This year I think we will be way better and maybe race our way to a top five or a win."

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF OF THE NO. 5 CARQUEST/KELLOGG'S MONTE CARLO SS: (ON HIS EXPECTATIONS AT INDIANAPOLIS.) "We are taking the same car we had earlier this season at Pocono, where Kyle finished eighth. The tracks have some similarities and that's why we are taking the Pocono car. A win at Indianapolis would be great for this No. 5 CARQUEST/Kellogg's team."

GUSTAFSON: (ON HIS FAVORITE BRICKYARD MOMENT.) "We (the No. 5 team) were testing our rookie year (2005) at the Brickyard. We heard there were old bricks -- original ones -- in a stream on the back side of the track. So we went out there, waded into some water about knee deep and fished out some bricks. I'm sure we weren't supposed to be there, but the bricks are so cool. So I have my brick on the mantle in my house and I'm waiting to mount my ring from my first Brickyard win on it. Hopefully, that will be this year."
