Ford 400 - Clint Bowyer Notes
Clint Bowyer
No. 07 Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
Event Preview Fact Sheet
Event/Date: Ford 400 – November 18, 2007
Venue: Homestead-Miami Speedway – Homestead, Fla.
NOTES:
- This Week’s Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet at Homestead-Miami Speedway … Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis No. 170 from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) NASCAR Cup Series stable. This is the same Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Bowyer wheeled to a runner-up finish in September at Kansas Speedway. Bowyer also raced Chassis No. 170 to a 13th-place place finish in July at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This is also the same workhorse he drove to a 10th-place finish earlier this year at Chicagoland Speedway and to a sixth-place finish in February at California Speedway. Additionally, Bowyer drove this car in March at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and was half-a-second faster than the leaders in the late goings until the car got away from him and suffered a 36th-place result. Built new for last year’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, Bowyer started second and went on to finish fourth and record, what was then, his career-best Cup Series finish. Bowyer also raced this No. 07 Chevy to a third-place finish last fall at California Speedway. This car also saw action last August at Michigan (started 29th – finished 33rd), at Kansas (started sixth – finished ninth) and Texas (started 14th – finished fifth) in October and in the 2006 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway (started 10th – finished 10th).
- Coming to the White Flag … In the nine races since the Chase for the NASCAR Cup began (New Hampshire, Dover, Kansas, Talladega, Charlotte, Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas and Phoenix), Bowyer has earned one pole, his first career win, three top-five and five top-10 finishes. With the exception of Dover, Texas and Phoenix, the sophomore driver has either tied or recorded career-best finishes at six of the nine stops. Of the 12 drivers in the Chase, Bowyer ranks fourth in the Percentage of Laps Led (10.4) and fourth in the Driver Rating categories (97.7). Bowyer has logged a solid 8.1 average finish in the nine Chase races and only trails points leader Jimmie Johnson (4.8) and second-place Jeff Gordon (5.2) in that category.
- Bowyer in the Loop …
- Homestead Highlights … In his lone NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway (HMS) Bowyer started and finished 10th. In three NASCAR Busch Series starts at the mile-and-a-half variably-banked oval, he calls an eighth-place finish his career best. Over those same three starts, Bowyer has a 14.3 average start and a 19th-place average finish.
- Winding Down … Over the season’s first 35 races, Bowyer has recorded one win, two poles, five top-five and 17 top-10 finishes. He has a 17.3 starting average and a 13.1 average finish. He has completed 10,195 of 10,315 total laps contested (98.84 percent) and sits third in the NASCAR Cup Series championship point standings, 241 points behind Johnson and 155 back of Gordon. The 28-year-old driver maintains a comfortable 146-point lead over fourth-place Kyle Busch and a 162-point margin over Tony Stewart in fifth. Bowyer will secure third in points in the final standings provided he finishes 37th or better this weekend. Heading into Homestead last season, Bowyer had a 20.6 starting average, a 19.9 average finish and was 17th in points. He had four top fives, 10 top 10s and led just 108 laps at this point during his rookie year.
- Speaking of Stats … Bowyer is the NASCAR Cup Series second-best Closer – a statistic derived from the number of positions improved over the final 10 percent of each race. Bowyer has gained an average of 1.629 spots in the season’s first 35 races and has improved a total of 57 positions over the closing 10 percent of those same races. He has also logged 6,066 of the 10,315 laps completed this season (58.8 percent) running in the top 15. Bowyer is ranked 11th in NASCAR’s Average Running Position category (15.154) and is tied with teammate Jeff Burton for 11th in the Driver Rating category (87.8). The Driver Rating is a formula that combines the following categories: wins, top-15 finishes, average running position while on the lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. The maximum a driver can earn in each race is 150 points. The Driver Rating number is used pre-race as a prediction tool and post-race as a performance evaluator.
- RCR at Homestead … Homestead has been a bit of an Achilles Heel for RCR and is one of the few race tracks where team owner Richard Childress hasn’t earned a victory. As a company, RCR’s best finish at HMS came in the 2003 Ford 400 when Kevin Harvick finished second. Collectively, in 23 starts, RCR has two top-five and 10 top-10 finishes at the south Florida circuit.
- Keep on Rollin’ … Bowyer has yet to record a DNF (did not finish) in 2007. He and Harvick are the only two Chase drivers to have finished every race this season. Bowyer has been running at the end of every race dating back to Phoenix last November, a streak of 36 races.
- Don’t Miss a Beat … This weekend Bowyer’s Jack Daniel’s Chevy will be one of five cars featured on DIRECTV’s HotPass Coverage. CLINT BOWYER QUOTES
You started 10th and finished 10th at Homestead last year. It doesn’t get a whole lot more consistent than that.
“We had a good car at Homestead last year. Typically, Homestead hasn’t been the best track for me. I haven’t quite figured out what it takes to be on top there. We’ve been improving on our finishes just about everywhere this year, especially in the Chase, so hopefully we can improve on our 10th-place finish last year and get up there and race for a win.”
Did you welcome the changes to the track last year? Is it racier now than it was before?
“I think so. The race track is fun. I’m kind of a bottom feeder but you can get up there and run the middle and on the outside. Homestead makes for a pretty good track at the end of the season.”
How much are you looking forward to the off season?
“I’m looking forward to going back to Kansas and enjoying Thanksgiving and being able to do whatever I want to do. I’m just looking forward to having some time to myself. Truth be told, I’m a racer and I complain about being too busy but as soon as I’m not busy, I’ll be complaining because I’m ready to go back racing. “
Since you travel so much during the season and are always on the run, are you going to stick around your house in Davidson County (N.C.) this winter?
“I’ve got a lot of things to do around the house that I’ve been neglecting. I’m going to stay around there, race go karts with the guys and enjoy non job-related stuff. I’ll definitely go back home and see my family in Kansas over the holidays. That’s always fun. I’m just looking forward to enjoying a normal life without the hectic schedule.”
Are you good at that? Are you good at slowing down?
“No, but I like to think I am. Once I slow down, I’m ready to go back after it. It’s not that I really slow down, I just do different things. I’m just looking forward to having a weekend off. That’s the thing about our lives and our jobs. Normal people with regular jobs work just as long and just as hard as we do but they have their weekends off. Our weekends are Tuesday and Wednesday and I tell people that it’s no fun because everyone else is working. I’m surprised all of us don’t have friends bought off (laughs) so we have someone to hang out with on Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s fun to go out on the weekend and enjoy the nightlife. There isn’t much going on Tuesday or Wednesday night.”
