Dodge Dealers 400 - Rookie Post-Race Quotes

Where the Raybestos Rookies finished at Dover:
Montoya 10th
Reutimann 18th
Menard 21st
Ragan 25th
Allmendinger 43rd

RICKY VIERS, CREW CHIEF, No. 84 RED BULL TOYOTA: “Well, we felt like we had a good opportunity to make up some point and gain a position or two. It was important to get a good finish so we could stay in the top-43 in owners points which guarantees us a spot in the race in case qualifying is ever rained out. If we could have finished 27th or better, we would have passed the No. 36 car in points. Today was just one of those days. On the start we lost the motor, so we will just have to go back to the shop and figure out what happened and hope we have better luck next week.”

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA IN THE No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT DOVER.

Notes:

  • Montoya scored a 10th-place finish in today’s race, his fourth top-10 finish of the 2007 season. He took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the 12th time in 28 races.
  • Montoya scored his best finish since he placed second at Indianapolis (race No. 20).
  • DID YOU KNOW? This is the second consecutive fall race at Dover where a Raybestos Rookie has finished in the top-10.

MONTOYA: “I couldn’t really find a good balance. It was either too loose or too tight and we fought that all day. We just really stayed out of trouble. That was the key thing. It’s good. I’m pretty happy. The last few weeks have been annoying when we had a good car and this week we finally figured something out.” HOW CHALLENGING WERE THE NUMEROUS CAUTION FLAGS AND DELAYS NEAR THE END OF THE RACE? “It’s hard because you got to go and everybody really wants to go and it makes your life pretty tough.” YOU HAD A CLOSE CALL WITH JAMIE MCMURRAY. “He just run out of road and run into me. We were running side-by-side for a couple of laps and that’s about it.” COMMENT ON MAKING YOUR CAR BETTER THROUGHOUT THE RACE. “Yeah, it’s incredible. It’s great to get a top-10 finish. The real key today was that we had a decent car, a 10th to 15th-place car, and we just stayed out of trouble all day.”

DONNIE WINGO, CREW CHIEF, No. 42 TEXACO HAVOLINE DODGE: “We kind of hung in there all day. We probably averaged 15th or 16th all day. For only his second time here he had a good qualifying effort. With the COT stuff, we really struggled to start with and I think we’re really coming around a lot better. We had a 10-times better race today than we had here the first race.” DID YOU HAVE ANY CLOSES CALLS ON PIT ROAD? “No, we didn’t really have any issues there. Everything was good on pit road. We qualified good so we got a good pit stall where we had an opening and everything worked good in the pits. We had excellent pit stops all day and that’s what really kept us up there and kept track position. The guys did a really good job on the pits.” IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE FAST AND CAREFUL ON THIS PIT ROAD? “To a certain degree. I mean, this is probably one of the worst pit roads we have on the circuit. It’s just so narrow there’s just not any room for error for a tire rolling or anything happening on pit road because it barely is two lanes wide. It’s probably the worst pit road. When you get off here and not have any problems on pit road you’ve done good.” YOU AND JUAN WORKED TOGETHER AND GROUND OUT A TOP-10 TODAY. IS THAT A PRODUCT OF YOU GUYS HAVING RACES TO WORK TOGETHER AND GET THE COMMUNICATION BETTER? “Everybody has really worked hard. All the guys at the shop have really worked hard on the COT stuff trying to get the package down a little bit better with the bump stops and stuff and they’ve done a really good job of getting it better. We’ve just got to go to the next level now to get it as good as some of these other guys.” HOW DO YOU GET BETTER? “I just feel like we need to get our cars better. Today we fought loose, loose, loose all day and that’s something better than we have been because we usually fight tight, tight, tight all day. He’s getting more comfortable with the car, he’s getting more confidence in the car when we can free the car up some but today we were just too loose.”

DAVID RAGAN, No. 6 AAA FORD: “Man, I wish I could come back and kind of start all over, Busch and Cup. We just really struggled. This is one of my favorite tracks and seemed to run well here in the spring. Our Cup car was just a handful all day. The first 15 laps it was a rocket ship. We moved up 10 spots and I thought we were going to have an excellent car from there on and it was extremely tight. We pitted that one time, bad wheel chatter, and didn’t find anything wrong. It was just a bad day. After you pit under green and lose three laps and then we lost a couple more there during our green flag stops. Tough day but I had a good effort to come out in the top-25. That’s almost unbelievable to how bad our car was at times. At the end we got our car back pretty decent but you just can’t give up two-thirds of the race and then expect to come back. We’ll learn from it and try to move on and do better at Kansas.” WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOU HIT THE TIRE ON PIT ROAD? “I was looking at my tach to make sure that I wasn’t speeding or anything and then my spotter hollered at the last minute that there was a tire and we barely got into it.”

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 DOMINOS.COM TOYOTA: “We could never get the #00 Dominos.com Toyota handling the way we would have wanted. I think Frank (Kerr) and the guys made almost every adjustment you can. It was loose one run, then tight the next. It just would not handle in the corners. It’s an okay finish. I think we survived the battle of attrition more than anything. I really thought we had a good chance of finishing in the top-10, but it didn’t happen. I’m still proud of the team. They continue to work hard and deserve finishes in the top-10.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, No. 84 RED BULL TOYOTA: WHAT HAPPENED? “I’m not sure. Either it did the same thing it did in practice or it jumped back out of gear and it slammed itself or I missed a shift. That one happened so quick I’m not sure.”
