WIX FILTERS LAP LEADER NOTES FOR THE PEPSI 400 NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES RACE AT DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY, JULY 7, 2007.
Clint Bowyer led four times for 55 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in the Pepsi 400. He captured the award for the first time this season. He is sixth different driver in the last six races to win the award. Bowyer has now led a total of 78 laps six races this season.
Bowyer finished seventh in tonight’s race, his ninth top-10 in 18 races this season.
UNOFFICIALLY Bowyer is 11th in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings, 15 points behind 10th-place Martin Truex Jr.
Jeff Gordon leads the overall WIX Filters Lap Leader standings by one race (4-3) over Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson.
MIKE DILLON, VICE PRESIDENT OF COMPETITION, RICHARD CHILDRESS RACING: “We’re very happy to win the WIX award and glad they sponsor the lap leader award. We had a great night. The 07 [Bowyer] was fast all weekend. You know how it is here in the draft. You’ve got to get shuffled right. I think the 5 [Kyle Busch] was one of my picks to win the race, the 29 [Kevin Harvick] and the 07. McMurray is always fast he just may not be there at the end but he did it tonight and congratulations to those guys. The 07 team was great. We had a car that could have won the race and unfortunately it just didn’t shuffle out right for us. We had a good car, we had a good engine. Our engine department has really been working hard to make gains and I think that showed up tonight. Unfortunately the 29 got run up into the wall and it hurt him but he had a shot at it, too. You could say coming in here if can we get a top-10 we’d be pleased but we had a car we could have won with so everybody is going to be a little bit disappointed. We’ll take it and go to next week.”
