ELLIOTT DRAFTS INTO DAYTONA FOR A SPECIAL WEEKEND OF RECOGNITION
As the 1985 and 1987 winner of the Daytona 500, Bill Elliott is set to participate in a media luncheon and induction ceremony at the Daytona USA Attraction on Thursday, July 5th. Every living winner of Daytona 500 in the past will kick off an awareness campaign for the 50th running of the Daytona 500, set for February, 2008. Attendees will pose for a group photograph in the morning, and then have their respective footprints cast for an upcoming Daytona USA Attraction, located just outside of the speedway infield. As his statistics show, Daytona International Speedway is a special place in the career of Bill Elliott.
The 2007 Pepsi 400 will mark Elliott’s 56th start at the 2.5-mile World Center of Racing track. He has won the prestigious Daytona 500 twice (1985 and 1987) and has two Pepsi 400 victories, coming in the 1988 and 1991 seasons, respectively. He can also count 15 top-five finishes and an amazing 24 top-10 finishes in his Daytona trials. He’s led 614 laps of competition and holds five separate Bud Pole Awards.
The Wood Brothers/JTG Ford will be sponsored by the United States Air Force this Saturday night, marking their fourth of eight stints as the primary sponsor of the No. 21 car in 2007. The chassis is number 82 and was last used in the Budweiser Shootout back in February, when Ken Schrader drove it to an 11th place finish.
WHAT THE TEAM HAS TO SAY
Bill Elliott, driver of the No. 21 Air Force Ford:
“I sure hope we can cap off this weekend with a good finish. I’m honored to participate in the footprint ceremony on Thursday, which should be a pretty neat deal for all of us that have been fortunate enough to win a Daytona 500. Aside from winning the ’88 Championship, those two victories are among my best achievement in the sport. I hope we can get this Air Force Ford up front Saturday night and in contention.”
Michael McSwain, Crew Chief of the No. 21 Air Force Ford:
“We’ve completely re-worked the body on chassis 82 from the ground up and it’s been to the wind tunnel, so hopefully we’ll cut a good lap right off the truck. It’s kind of hard to make up ground after that. If we play our cards right and avoid trouble during the race, we might make up a lot of points here.”
