Gatorade Duel at Daytona: Race 2 - Rookie Post-Race Quotes
JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE: “We were doing really good. I want to thank everybody at Chip Ganassi Racing. It was one of those things. The car was fast and now we start from the back.” WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR FIRST NASCAR EXPERIENCE AT DAYTONA? “It was awesome. The first thing that I said to my crew chief was I don’t want to run three-wide. I tried to keep it clean. The first lap I was three-wide already. It’s one of those things.” COMMENT ON THE CONDITION OF THE CAR. “The right front hub failed but I hit the wall a little bit so we’ll probably work on it a little bit and it’ll be fine. It’s a fast racecar. It was good. It was a little tight but I think everyone at the Texaco/Havoline Dodge and Chip Ganassi have done amazing jobs and just happy to be part of it.” COMMENT ON YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE AT DAYTONA. “I’ve got to say it was pretty good. The last time I was here I led the 24 hours and now we led the 150. It’s nice to see the car is competitive and Stremme is out there running up front so it’s good to see. It was awesome. No complaints.” DO YOU HAVE EVEN MORE CONFIDENCE FOR THE DAYTONA 500 BECAUSE YOU RAN UP FRONT TODAY? “Yeah, but today was easier because we started up front. Now we’ve got to start from the back but it’s nice to see. Everybody at Chip Ganassi and the Texaco/Havoline Dodge ran pretty good today. Harvick helped me at the beginning and that was very nice because I thought I was left out dry. Kevin came along and gave me a good push and we both moved to the front pretty quickly. And then I had a push, I think, from Kyle Busch, and when Kyle pushed me we just both went all the way to the front.” DO YOU HAVE A FEEL FOR WHAT IT’S GOING TO BE LIKE ON SUNDAY? “Here, all the guys in front, we didn’t want to do anything. We didn’t want to wreck, we didn’t want to get into racing or anything. I thought it was good, learning where you need to be, how you get runs out of the corner, and you do that you’ll be fine.”
DONNIE WINGO, CREW CHIEF, No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE: “I think we lost a wheel bearing. He just said the car was a little bit tight and he said he felt it when it started to seize up coming off of 4 up there. And then when it did it built up so much heat it blew the bead on right front tire. We’re lucky. It could have been a lot worse, I guess, and I think we’ll be able to fix it and I think we’ve got a good car for the 500. I’d have like to have seen what was going to happy after a few more laps. We’ve still got the car in one piece.” WHAT ARE THE POSITIVES YOU CAN TAKE FROM THIS RACE? “I think his experience, the way we ran. He jumped up there and he made a pretty bold move to take the lead and those guys worked with him and he never got too far out front; just let ‘em kept pushing him. I don’t think they would have got by him until this deal here happened. It’s just one of those deals.” ARE YOU SURPRISED HOW WELL YOU RAN? “Not really. I felt good about coming down here. The more experience he gains drafting the better he’ll get getting runs, passing people and where to go and where not to go. The guy is impressive, that’s all you can say.”
DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 00 DOMINO’S TOYOTA: YOU MADE THE 500 BEFORE THE THIS RACE STARTED. “Something electrical there. The thing just wouldn’t run, even from the green flag. It had an intermittent flutter and we switched boxes and stuff like that. Just something electrical and before we got into trouble with it, we weren’t going anywhere, we figured we’d park it and get ready for practice tomorrow and get ready for the 500.” HOW MUCH DRAFTING PRACTICE DID YOU GET TODAY? “We drafted a little bit. I don’t know why it wouldn’t go. I switched boxes and stuff. Something was going on with it there. It just wouldn’t run. It was real flat. The motor ran great so it’d definitely something electrical. We’ll get it fixed. At least we found out now. The main deal is we’re in the 500 and that’s all I’m worried about.” WILL YOU BE ABLE TO SLEEP TONIGHT? “Yeah, for the first time in a long time.” HOW WAS IT WHEN YOU KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO BE IN THE RACE? “I was feeling really, really good. It’s just a huge sigh of relief and then I’m out there about 10 laps into the thing and we’re switching ignition boxes on the thing trying to make it run. I’m thinking ‘Wow, it’s a good thing we were in’ because something was going wrong with it. We’ll change stuff around. We’ll probably end up changing motors. There’s nothing wrong with the motor. The thing’s running good but we’ll probably just change everything to be careful because with the electrical stuff it might have hurt it. You can’t take no chances. We’ve got too much riding on it.” HOW WAS THE CAR
BEFORE YOU HAD PROBLEMS? “We were real free, real loose, so I just fell in line and as long as I could keep behind guys and keep air off the nose, it was okay. At that point, Michael’s got our backup car and we don’t really have a backup, so it’s just best to play it safe and kind of bail out and kind of ride around there. We could suck up and fall back even with the way the thing was running. We’ll get the electrical problem fixed and we’ll be ready to go.” IS IT A BIG RELIEF FOR THE WHOLE ORGANIZATION TO GET ALL THREE CARS INTO THE 500? “It’s a huge relief and I think it’s pretty big for the whole organization. A young organization to come out of Daytona and make the race, it’s pretty huge. I can’t be happier for everybody involved, especially my guys and Domino’s, I’m pretty happy for them.”
PAUL MENARD, No. 15 MENARDS/PEAK ANITFREEZE CHEVROLET: “It’s really frustrating. We stayed out and we probably shouldn’t have but I got just really tight and didn’t really do anything.” IT LOOKED LIKE YOU JUST COULDN’T GET IN RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME TO GET TO THE FRONT. “There wasn’t a whole lot of friends but we were in a good enough place to do it. I guess the 10 car checked-up and he lost momentum. We got really tight at the end. We stayed out and we probably shouldn’t have but that’s the way it goes.”
