BRIAN VICKERS, No. 83 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Team Red Bull:
Starting position: 17th
How was your qualifying run?
"Our qualifying run was good. It was good off (the truck) and that's all that matters right now because we are in. The car was
really rough because we were trying something different here that we've tried at other places, but not California. I'm not quite
convinced yet, maybe in race trim, but not qualifying trim but unfortunately we didn't realize that until it was too late to change
it for practice and we didn't want to change it after practice. We could have been better but we struggled with what we had and
we got the Red Bull Camry in the show. "
Did the cloud cover affect your qualifying run?
"The cloud cover definitely helps. You wouldn't find a guy out here who wouldn't say it doesn't help. The clouds got there
maybe one car behind me, maybe two -- I don't know how much it is going to cool off. I don't think the track temp is going to
loose 10 degrees, it doesn't really matter. I don't think it is a big advantage. "
AJ ALLMENDINGER, No. 84 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Team Red Bull:
Starting position: 18th
How was your qualifying run?
"This is a great job by everybody at Team Red Bull -- they've worked hard. The guys back at the shop and my guys here have
stuck by me. They could have easily said I didn't have the experience and went the separate way but they've been behind me
every step of the way. They've been behind me every week -- we've been fighting together. This is a team sport and you are
going to win and loose together. I think the biggest deal was getting in the Busch car earlier today. This track is so hot and so
slippery that I literally think if I would have gone out there in my Cup car that I wouldn't have made it. It just gives me
confidence, just like being in the truck last weekend in Bristol. I just need laps."
MICHAEL WALTRIP, No. 55 NAPA Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing:
Starting position: 25th
How was your qualifying lap?
"It was a bad day. We were really slow earlier. I just couldn't get the car to stick at all. I've always prided myself on telling the
guys it's either tight or loose -- I don't do 'it's both.' Today, it's been both all day. We made some changes -- some good
adjustments -- and that Toyota engine really helped pull me through. I think that's the most powerful engine we've had. I was
able to get my foot in it and I knew that was going to be my biggest ally. I was desperate to get my foot in it and was able to get
it in there. I look liked I was swatting flies in there, but we were able to hang on and leave the gas down and we made it."
Was the heat a problem?
"It's all the same for everyone."
JEREMY MAYFIELD, No. 36 360 OTC Toyota Camry, Bill Davis Racing:
Starting position: 27th
How was your qualifying?
"We had a bad day -- we were 43rd in practice and only got four laps in. Then, we go through technical inspection and they
found a few things wrong. We didn't mean to, they were just honest mistakes. We got put on the five minute clock and the guys
rushed the car out there. The oil wasn't really hot. It felt like everything that could have gone wrong was going wrong and then
we qualify like we did and it got us in the race. I never thought we were going to make it -- thought we were in trouble. For us
to come out here and make the race like we did is pretty cool."
How do you approach the race Sunday knowing you've had a win at this track before?
"We just wanted to get qualified. I haven't even thought about the race yet. We want to run good and I think we can -- we have
the potential to run better. We have to get better as a team. With a hot day like today it just brings the best out of them. It runs
them all down. I'm just glad we are in the race. They all worked really hard today. We have to continue to get better and
better."
DAVE BLANEY, No. 22 Caterpillar Toyota Camry, Bill Davis Racing:
Starting position: 30th
How was your qualifying?
"I was just slow. I don't know what happened. We were good in practice - pretty happy with the car. I don't know where I
missed it right there. That lap felt pretty good to me, if I had to gauge just by feel I would say it was a pretty good lap. I don't
know where I missed it at."
Was the heat a problem?
"It's the same for everybody."
