Sharpie 500

Bristol Motor Speedway News and Notes

  • Blaney’s No. 22 Camry…The Caterpillar Racing team plans to use COT 11 this weekend at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. This is the same car the team ran in the first event this season at Bristol. It was also used at Phoenix International Raceway and in both road course races this year.
  • Blaney’s Career Stats…Dave Blaney will make his 257th career NASCAR Nextel Cup Series start when the green flag waves Sunday. He made his first career Cup Series start in October 1992 at [Rockingham] North Carolina Speedway and drove his Bill Davis Racing-owned entry to an eighth-place finish (qualified fourth) in his first Cup Series start at Bristol in 2000.
  • Blaney at Bristol…Blaney has made 13 starts on the .533-mile high-banked oval during his Cup Series career, starting as high as fourth and finishing as high as sixth, both in 2000. He has scored four top-15 finishes in Cup Series competition at Bristol Motor Speedway and has qualified in the top 10 on three occasions.
  • BDR at BMS…Competitors driving Bill Davis Racing-owned cars have been racing at Bristol Motor Speedway since 1993 and have made 40 starts. Those drivers have posted two top-five finishes and seven top-10 finishes in Cup Series competition.
  • Heading to Iowa…The Caterpillar Racing team flew directly from Michigan to Newton, Iowa to spend Wednesday testing at Iowa Speedway.
  • Bring Your Sharpie…Blaney will sign autographs at the Caterpillar souvenir trailer Saturday afternoon. Stop by the Cat souvenir trailer or visit www.daveblaney.com for updates and additional information.
  • Bristol’s Broadcast Schedule…Qualifying for Saturday evening’s event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 24. The 500-lap event is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET Saturday, Aug. 25, and will broadcast LIVE on ESPN (TV), PRN (radio) and Sirius Satellite Radio.

Dave Blaney’s Thoughts on Bristol…“It should be an interesting weekend at Bristol. With the pavement everyone is kind of wondering what the track will be like. I’ve heard a lot of really good things about the job they did, and I think everyone is looking forward to getting there. It’s been a really short week and our Cat Racing team has worked really hard. A lot of the Cat team went straight from Michigan to test and the guys back at the shop had to work really hard to get us ready for Bristol. There certainly hasn’t been any time off for anyone so it will be nice to hopefully have a Sunday off to recuperate a bit.

“Being back in the top 35 will help us out a lot this weekend. It takes some of the pressure off Friday and will allow is to work on our race setup a lot more than if we had to spend Friday concentrating on just making the show. The qualifying times are so close at this place that you can easily miss this race by a thousandth, so we’re glad to be back in the top 35. We’ve had some really good runs here lately and if we can keep that going and stay out of trouble, then we should be able to stay there. Bristol is tough; you never know what’s coming, so our main objective will just be to survive.”
