NEXTEL Open - Rookie Qualifying Quotes

DAVID RAGAN, No. 6 AAA FORD: THAT WAS A GOOD LAP. “Yeah, I guess it was a good lap. You know, for a Raybestos Rookie I want as many laps as I can get and it practice today we flat out just ran out of time. We didn’t even get to make a qualifying lap and so I felt a gut feeling that we could have run a little better. But at the same time, we’re here to make laps and not tear up race cars in qualifying. I drove it as hard as I thought I possibly could without taking a chance and wrecking. Man, it’s better than I thought. If we can wind up in the top-five or 10 that’ll certainly make for an interesting night tomorrow night.” SO YOU WANT TO RUN AS WELL AS YOU CAN AS CLEAN AS YOU CAN? “I got to find that line. Everybody talks about no points, a lot of money but still, we’ve got some nice race cars out here. That doesn’t give us an opportunity to just go out here and do something stupid. Yeah, this isn’t our best downforce car but still it’s a good car and we don’t want to tear anything up. We’ve got to run hard and got to be smart. I can’t believe I’m saying that [smiles] but we’ve got to be smart.”

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE: WAS THE CAR TIGHT OR LOOSE? “It was good, a little tight in the middle and a little loose off but it was good. We were on the conservative side so I think we’ve got a very good race car. It should be interesting.” THE MAIN THING IS NOT TO WRECK IN THE OPEN. YOU NEED TO GET LAPS AND GET EXPERIENCE. “There’s not a lot of laps. I think here, I think you want to run, if you can stay in the top-five you want to run there and see what happens. After the first 20 laps see how your car is, make a couple changes if you decide to stop. If you don’t then stay outside and go with it, you know.” ARE YOU USING THE OPEN AS A TEST? “It’s hard. It’s a different car from the car that we’ve got for the 600. It’s a good car but I think the car we’ve got next week should be a lot better.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, No. 84 RED BULL TOYOTA: “It was good. The car was hooked-up the first lap. There’s not much different that I could ask for. Finally got everything out of it. Maybe could have got back to the throttle a little bit sooner in Turn 3 but other than that, that’s all she had.” WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR TOMORROW NIGHT? “Probably a lot of carnage, a lot of crazy people out there. But that’s just it: there is no expectations. Obviously we want to go up there and we want to do well and have a chance to get in. But more than anything I just want to get all the laps in and get used to it hopefully for next week.” HOW MUCH OF A TEST IS THIS FOR NEXT WEEK? “We do a little bit. We got a different car here just knowing that there is probably a good chance of it might be wrecked when we leave it. For me, it’s just laps; for the team it’s just laps so that’s never going to hurt.” DID THE COOL WEATHER IN QUALIFYING MAKE A DIFFERENCE? “Yeah, I mean definitely the track is getting better but it’s only going to get faster for everybody else. The draw was a disadvantage so hopefully we’re saving that for next week when we get a better draw.”

PAUL MENARD, No. 15 MENARDS/JOHNS MANVILLE CHEVROLET: “I was just really happy with the way the car drove in practice, in race runs. I couldn’t really get a good lap for qualifying. We did a couple runs and couldn’t go any faster than what we ran. We ran race runs just real loose so we tightened it up a little bit with air pressures for a qualifying run and I basically under-drove it the first lap. I saw four cars wreck right before I went out. I under-drove the first one and then the second lap, trying to get a little more and I about wrecked it myself so I just backed off. I’m really looking forward to the race tomorrow.” DID THE DELAYS IN QUALIFYING WORK TO YOUR ADVANTAGE? “It’s going to get faster. I’m not sure what Carl ran but I think it’s going to be a 28.70 will probably be the pole.”
