NEXTEL Open - Rookie Post-Race Quotes
AJ ALLMENDINGER, No. 84 RED BULL TOYOTA: YOU FINISHED TONIGHT WHEN A LOT OF OTHER CARS DID NOT. “We would have liked to have been better in the race. The start pretty much screwed us. Just another stupid mistake by the same guy. That just put us behind and I don’t think we had a car good enough to run up front still. I think I was getting some bad reads on the car because I was in all the traffic and we were just way too tight the whole time. But on a positive note, it’s the first time I’ve been able to run a race on a mile-and-a-half in a Cup car. I got some experience and the car we got coming back was the one we tested for the 600 so that’s a good one.” AS WILD AS THAT RACE WAS, CAN YOU LEARN ANYTHING? “No. We might have learned a little bit on the car but like I said the car we got coming back is better anyway and that’s just experience. I’ll take last night’s experience in the truck race a lot more than I will this one.” IN LAST NIGHT’S TRUCK RACE, HOW DID YOU SAVE THE TRUCK COMING OFF TURN 4? “I just practiced it again against Robby Gordon. I’d like to say that was all skill but I won’t lie. It was pretty much luck. I just had the thing cranked and it straightened back up.”
JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, No. 42 TEXACO/HAVOLINE DODGE: “I just got really loose in the middle of one and two. I was a little bit of afraid that the car was going to be really loose and it was. It was good, I was in the middle of the racetrack and as soon as I went and touched the throttle it just got really, really loose. I just went for the inside. I had a good start and that was it.”
PAUL MENARD, No. 15 MENARDS/JOHNS MANVILLE CHEVROLET: “Rookie mistake on Juan Pablo’s part, I guess. The start of the race these tires are so hard, they’re cold, there not gripping and he made it three-wide and chased it up the hill and kind of jammed everybody up. AJ and I got together and we all kind of met in the middle.”
DAVID RAGAN, No. 6 AAA FORD: “Well, you know, the outside groove had been working great for me the first few restarts and I jumped down on the bottom and Martin just got a great run on the outside and just didn’t have any air there on the right side. Got loose and tried to be a superstar and hang on but I couldn’t I feel like I let these AAA guys down. They brought a pretty good race car for me today and felt like we had a shot to beat Carl and definitely finish second. But I screwed up and I’ll definitely have to learn from that and try not to let it happen again.” DID THE TRACK CHANGE? “No it hadn’t changed. The racetrack was the way it had been. I felt like the track has a lot of grip I was probably just too sure of myself and the race car. You know, I should have never let the 1 car jump on the outside. That outside groove had been working just fine for me and I should have never jumped down there and we wouldn’t be sitting in here right now.” YOU RAN WELL TONIGHT. “We had a good car, I felt like. These guys have been working extremely hard and brought this pretty fast race car out here. I feel like I kind of let ‘em down. It’s not tore up that bad. I just hate that we’re sitting in here in the garage watching the last of this race. That’s going to be disappointing.”
