Pep Boys Auto 500 - Kyle Busch Notes

PREVIEW: KYLE BUSCH (NO. 5 CARQUEST/KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET)
VENUE: ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY (1.54-MILE QUAD OVAL)
CIRCUIT: NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES (RACE 33 OF 36)
EVENT: SUNDAY, OCT. 28, 2007 (325 LAPS, 500 MILES)

STILL CHASING THE CUP: After six races in the 2007 Chase for the NEXTEL Cup, driver Kyle Busch is sixth in the point standings. Scoring his fourth top-five finish of the Chase at Martinsville, Va., Busch is now 290 points behind leader Jeff Gordon. The No. 5 Kellogg's/CARQUEST team continues to impress, as they now have 10 top-five finishes and 18 top-10s in the 2007 season.

CARQUEST'S HONORARY CREW MEMBER: Team sponsor CARQUEST has extended a special invitation to Anthony Tropea from Canton, Ohio, to assist the No. 5 team as an honorary crew member for the Atlanta Motor Speedway race weekend. Tropea is the service manager of the National Tire and Battery store in Canton and earned the opportunity to join the No. 5 team because his store had the largest increase in parts purchases from CARQUEST during the month of September.

BUSCH AT ATLANTA: Busch's best finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway across six NEXTEL Cup starts is 12th, which he has done on three separate occasions. He also owns two poles and a third-place finish in the NASCAR Busch Series there, along with a victory in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

NEW HENDRICK RECORD: Jimmie Johnson's first-place finish Sunday at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway was the 15th win of the 2007 NEXTEL Cup campaign for Hendrick Motorsports, marking the highest single-season victory total in the organization's history. Since 1984, Hendrick Motorsports has posted 164 Cup-level wins, including seven seasons with 10 victories or more: 2007 (15 wins thus far), 1998 (14 wins), 2004 (13 wins), 1996 (12 wins), 1997 (11 wins), 1995 (10 wins) and 2005 (10 wins).

SPECIAL DELIVERY: No. 5 team front-tire carrier J.D. Holcomb and his wife Diana welcomed a daughter, Jacey Diana Holcomb, delivered by Dr. Thomas Barefoot on Oct. 14 at 3:03 p.m. ET. Both mother and baby are home and doing well.

CAR SELECTION FOR ATLANTA: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 358 as the primary Monte Carlo SS for this weekend's NEXTEL Cup race at Atlanta. It will mark the car's first appearance since the 2006 season.

DOUBLE DUTY: Busch will race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for Billy Ballew Motorsports this weekend at Atlanta. The last time Busch raced a truck in Atlanta was in October 2005 when he led 45 laps en route a victory. Busch plans on racing the truck again at Texas Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

SHOWING THE WAY AT MARTINSVILLE: Throughout Sunday's 506-lap event at Martinsville, there were only seven lap leaders -- three of which were Hendrick Motorsports drivers. Teammates Busch, Johnson and Jeff Gordon combined to lead 421 circuits. Busch, who finished fourth, led 106 of those laps.

PIT CREW FAST AGAIN: The No. 5 Kellogg's/CARQUEST crew won its third Checkers/Rally's Double-Drive Thru challenge Sunday at Martinsville Speedway. The win puts the No. 5 team in the running for "Pit Crew of the Year," which is awarded at the end of the NEXTEL Cup season. The team spent the least amount of time on pit road en route to a fourth-place finish at Martinsville.

KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 CARQUEST/KELLOGG'S MONTE CARLO SS: (ON FINISHING BETTER IN ATLANTA.) "I'm not sure what it is about Atlanta, but we seem to have a thing for 12th-place finishes. It's tough because we have had flashes of brilliance there and then just can't finish out the race. Alan (Gustafson) and I have talked about it. We need to pace ourselves."

BUSCH: (ON THE CHASE.) "It's frustrating (LAUGHS). We finish third and fourth in the past two weeks and lose 10 points on Jeff (Gordon). But, all in all, the No. 5 Kellogg's/CARQUEST team has been hitting on all cylinders and I know if we didn't have the wrecks in Kansas and Talladega (Ala.) we would be right up there challenging Jeff and Jimmie for the lead. It's a hard pill to swallow, but if Jeff or Jimmie have two bad races, we could be right up there at the end. Right now, I think it's between my teammates."

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF OF THE NO. 5 CARQUEST/KELLOGG'S MONTE CARLO SS: (ON PAST PROBLEMS IN ATLANTA.) "Last race at Atlanta Kyle was very fast out of the gate, but we had some issues with him cording the tires halfway through a run. Kyle drives hard every single lap, so this time we need to help pace him so we can make the tires last through the entire run. Otherwise, we've been pretty good at the mile-and-a half tracks so I think we should have good results if we can just make it through a tire run."
