Cup history. The first road-course race was held on an airstrip at Linden, New Jersey on June 13, 1954.
Would You Believe?
Mario Andretti failed to finish all four of his NASCAR NEXTEL Cup road-course races, yet posted a top-10
- finishing ninth at Riverside in January 1967.
Changing Concepts
Twelve drivers failed to finish the 2004 race at Watkins Glen – the most DNFs in the past 10 road-course
races. By contrast, in the 1967 Motor Trend 500 at Riverside, only 12 of the 44 starters finished the race.
Double Duty
Buck Baker won the 100-mile road-course race at Watkins Glen on Aug. 4, 1957. Just hours later, Parnelli
Jones won the 72-mile road-course race at Kitsap County Airport in Bremerton, Washington - the only time two

Good and Not so Good
In spite of road-course specialists finishing in four of the top-five positions in the 2005 Sirius Satellite Radio
at the Glen, the employment of road-course specialists, prevalent in recent years, has not been an unqualified
success. Boris Said, Scott Pruett, Ron Fellows are winless in a combined record of 35 races; posting just one
Bud Pole and 13 top-10 finishes. The three have also racked up nine DNFs.
Road-Course Consistency
Fireball Roberts was nine-for-nine, posting top-10 finishes in every one of his road-course appearances. He
had two victories: Cocoa Speedway - December 1956 and Augusta November 1963.
Buck Baker was nine-for-10; failing to finish in the top-10 only at Augusta in November 1963. Baker won at
Watkins Glen in 1957.
Mark Martin is third on the all-time road-course top-10 list of drivers with five or more road-course races at
32-for-40 top-10 finishes (80 percent). He is the only active driver in the top-10.
Road-Course Specialists - Not
Three drivers have posted their only NASCAR NEXTEL Cup victories on road courses: Dan Gurney, Ray
Elder and Mark Donahue. None of the three competed exclusively in road-course races.
