Dickies 500 - Rookie Post-Race Quotes
Where the Raybestos Rookies finished at Texas:
Bowyer 5th
Hamlin 10th
Truex Jr. 14th
Sorenson 17th
Yeley 20th
Stremme 24th
CLINT BOWYER IN THE No. 07 JACK DANIEL’S CHEVROLET WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT TEXAS.
Notes:
Bowyer finished fifth, his fourth top-five and 10th top-five of the 2006 season. This is his first top-five finish since he finished third at California (race No. 25).
Denny Hamlin finished 10th, his 18th top-10 finish of the 2006 season. He finished fourth in the spring race at Texas.
Hamlin UNOFFICIALLY is fourth in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings, 80 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson and two behind third-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hamlin leads fifth-place Kevin Harvick by 25 points.
Bowyer claimed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the eighth time this season.
Bowyer scored the best finish by a Raybestos Rookie in two fall races at Texas.
Both J.J. Yeley and David Stremme led a lap in tonight’s race. Yeley led once for three laps while Stremme led once for one lap. This is the second consecutive race at Texas where TWO or more Raybestos Rookies have led a lap.
BOWYER: “Gil [Martin, crew chief] and the guys did a great job. It was just a little too loose to stay with Tony. I tried to tighten it up. I told him that to go fast we needed to be tighter and then we lost track position in the pits. We lost five, six, seven spots and then I got really tight. It was a good call by him to put four tires on there at end on that green flag, on that pit stop and that got us back up front.” THIS CAR HAS FINISHED IN THE TOP-FIVE ALL BUT ONCE. “The Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet has been really good. Every time that car has been on the track it’s been fast. I just like it, I guess.” IS IT GOOD FOR YOU TO PICK UP SOME MOMENTUM NEAR TH END OF THE SEASON? “Yeah, absolutely it is. We’re running good. Our performance is there. We just can’t get the darn finish at the end of the race. We’ll get it. We’re learning and by next year we’ll be there.” IN THE LAST 100 LAPS, YOU WENT FROM RUNNING IN THE TOP-FIVE TO OUTSIDE THE TOP-10 TO BACK INSIDE THE TOP-FIVE. YOU HAD YOUR HANDS FULL. “Yeah we did. The car was really good all day long. To go faster with Tony I was going to have to tighten it up a little bit. It’s just a shame. When I asked ‘em to tighten it up, we lost track position in the pits and got really tight behind cars. But we were able to free it back up. Gil made a good car by putting four tires on there and the caution came at the right time.” YOU HAD A GOOD RACE FROM START TO FINISH. “We’ve been having good races. We just can’t put the whole package together. It just feels good tonight to put the whole package together.” THIS WAS A GOOD SOLID RUN FOR YOU. “Yeah, it was. It was really good all night long. To go faster with Tony I was going to have to tighten the car up. I was just a little bit too loose. When we tightened the car up we lost track position. We lost seven spots in the pits and the car just got too tight. We were able to get it back better. It was just a good night for us.”
DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FEDEX KINKO’S CHEVROLET: “It was just a fight all day. We just lost the balance on the car. I don’t think the conditions helped us much any. We were counting on sunny weather. It’s just one of those things where we missed the setup a little bit and we were back in the mid-20s most of the race, fighting back there with Matt and Mark. We ended up with a top-10 day and that was good.” THAT’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO BATTLE FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP. IT’S GOT TO BE A BRIGHT SPOT. “Yeah, I mean, it’s a bright spot to be able to bounce back like that and that’s what it’s all about is making good of your bad days. We’ve got to get back in the form that we were in the summer where we were running top-five and top-10 consistently throughout the race. We’re just not there now. Seems like we’re missing at the beginning and having to fight all day to get it back at the end. I’m happy to go to Phoenix. It’s a short track for me and hopefully we’ll beat ‘em out there.” YOU ARE 80 POINTS OUT WITH TWO RACES TO GO. “We’ve still got a shot at it and that’s what it’s all about: having a chance come Homestead. And I feel like we need to win the race at Phoenix to really put ourselves in a position to be good going into Homestead. We can’t help what the other guys do. We’ll see where we end up but I think overall it’s been a great year for us.” IS THIS TRACK DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT IN THE FALL VERSUS THE SPRING? “I don’t know. I just think we missed the setup. I think we were quite a bit different than what we have been in the past and I think the bumps have matured a lot more than what they have in the past. We missed it. When you’re coming in making wholesale changes under pit stops like we were, we got to hit it a little bit better than that. Hopefully with a little more experience I’ll be able to give better feedback for those guys.” YOU DID FINISH 10TH AND THERE IS A LOT OF RACING TO GO. “Yeah, it’s what it’s all about. I don’t think top-10s are going to win you a championship. Top-threes and fours like Jimmie and those guys are doing, that’s what’s going to win you a championships. They’ve been on it lately. They’re the guys who are the ones to beat. We’ve got to catch-up to those guys. I think we’ve fallen behind a little bit and we’ll see where we end up.” WAS THE CAR TIGHT OR LOOSE? “I was just all over the track and everything. It’s just one of those things that I scratch my head because I don’t know exactly how to fix the car because it’s tight in one instance and it’s loose in others. Not sure how to keep up with the whole thing. I’ll be glad when the season is over and start fresh.”
MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 1 BASS PRO SHOPS/TRACKER BOATS CHEVROLET: “The Bass Pro Shops Chevy was good all night. We tried a lot of adjustments but we were just a tick too loose all night. I’m really proud of Bono [crew chief Kevin Manion] and the guys. We needed a good run and the guys came through for me. We had some awesome pit stops. The 10 got loose. There was nowhere for me to go. That’s the way the year has gone.”
REED SORENSON, No. 41 TARGET/KRAFT DODGE: “Our car was way better than where we finished tonight. At times it was the fastest car on the track, especially towards the end of a long run. I feel bad for everyone on the Target team because we should’ve finished in the top-five. The car just got loose when I got under the 5 and came around on me. We managed to get a respectable finish, but it should’ve been a lot better. The car was awesome tonight and that gives us a lot of confidence heading into the final two races.”
GIL MARTIN, CREW CHIEF, No. 07 JACK DANIEL’S CHEVROLET: “The Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet was really good all night long. He just did a really good job and the guys did a great job on the car. We had a little miscue there on one pit stop. They did a great job all night long. They missed the jack stob and if it wasn’t for that, I know we’d have run second tonight. I can’t say if we had anything for Tony. On a long run, I think we were just as good but on a short run he was awfully strong. The car was just great tonight. That’s the way we’ve run several races in the last 10 right there and we finally got the finish we deserved out of it. We didn’t run in the top-10 all night long and bring home a 20th-place car. Tonight, maybe that’s a sign of things to come for next week and for Homestead, two really good tracks for us. We’re going to try to go there and win.” BOWYER AND TEAM BOTH SHOWED A LOT OF MATURITY DURING THE LAST 100 LAPS. “Well I think so. A lot of guys right there took two tires and gambled and just got gas or whatever there at the end. Four tires was going to be the way to go, I think, because it was so much faster with 20 to go. And then with the caution coming out right there at the end it was even an opportunity to open a bigger window for us. I think if the caution hadn’t happened, we’d have probably run like seventh. With the caution we run fifth. For once we were on the right side of the caution.” HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO GET SOME MOMENTUM, HAVE GOOD FINISHES AND END THE SEASON ON A POSITIVE NOTE? “I think it’s big because these guys are so pumped up because they’ve run so well and then we haven’t had anything to show for it. So going into the last part of the season with runs like that and they way we run at Atlanta and Kansas and the way we’ve run everywhere it’s just going to give them a lot of momentum going into the winter.”
BOWYER PRESS CONFERENCE
“The Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet was good all day long, after the first pit stop anyway. We freed the car up. It was loose all day but it was a second to fifth-place car. He [Martin] asked me what I needed to run with Tony and I told him that I was too loose to go that. We tried to tighten it up and we lost seven or eight spots on pit road. It was not the time to tighten it up because it got real right in traffic. We were able to come back in and he made a good call by putting four tires on in that green flag pit stop and luckily the caution came there at the end where we had four tires and they were on two.”
