Crown Royal 400 - Ryan Newman Notes

Ryan Newman/Richmond Advance

NEXTEL CUP

  • Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 12 Alltel My Circle Dodge, will make his ninth Richmond International Raceway start and his 162nd in NASCAR's Cup Series this Saturday in the Crown Royal 400.
  • Newman possesses a 4.375 starting average at the 0.75-mile track, the best among active drivers. In eight races, he has posted seven straight top-10 starts, the longest current streak.
  • In the fall of 2004, Newman earned the pole for the fall Richmond race, then came back last spring and started on the outside of the front row. He has started on the front row in three of the last four RIR races.
  • Newman has posted four top-five finishes, including one victory, at RIR, and six top 10s. His average finish at RIR is 11th.
  • In eight Richmond races, Newman has led a total of 354 laps, and has completed 96.3 percent of the laps in those events - 3,076 of 3,193. The most laps he has led in a single race at Richmond were 145 in the September 2002 event.
  • Newman has been running at the finish in all eight of his Richmond races.
  • Matt Borland, crew chief of the No. 12 Alltel My Circle Dodge, and the Alltel team will take chassis PRS-91 to Richmond this weekend. Built in 2005, it's the chassis Newman drove to a third-place finish at Richmond last spring. The team took it back for the fall Richmond race, but wrecked it in practice and had to go to a backup. It was tested at Richmond last month.

Newman on Richmond: "This race is critical to our season. We've had poor finishes in April before, but we've always come back from them to finish in the top 10 in the standings. Because we've always had good performances at this track, we believe this is the race where we can turn things around. We've run good the last two races, but been in the wrong place at the wrong time. We've always performed well at the next three tracks on the schedule and we're counting heavily on the month of May to turn our season around."

Quick Stats: Richmond International Raceway: 8 Races Led/Laps Led: 6/354 Best Starting Position: 1 (2004) Best Finishing Position: 1 (2003) May 2005 Start: 2 May 2005 Finish: 3

Quotes: Newman on Richmond: "I'm looking forward to running the Busch Series race at Richmond. We've always done well at that track and I think this will be beneficial to our performance there. Due to the new testing rules this year, it also will help us prepare for the second Richmond race, which has always played a critical role in our championship efforts."
