BRIAN VICKERS NOTES & QUOTES
PLATE PRODUCTION:
Brian Vickers and GMAC Racing recorded a third-place result Monday at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, marking the team's first top-five performance of the 2006 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season and its third consecutive top-10 finish at a restrictor-plate track. Dating back to the October 2005 Talladega event, only Vickers and Tony Stewart have recorded three straight top-10 results at superspeedways.
MANY VICKERS 'FIRSTS' CAME AT RIR:
Vickers, driver of the No. 25 GMAC Chevrolets, scored his first-ever top-10 finish in any NASCAR division while competing at Richmond in May 2002. Driving a family-owned car, Vickers, who was 18 at the time, finished seventh after starting 38th in the NASCAR Busch Series event. In May 2004, he captured both his first NEXTEL Cup pole position and top-10 finish (seventh) at the .75-mile track.
LOTS OF ACTION:
Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 247 will get plenty of track time with the No. 25 GMAC team this week. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS was tested Tuesday and Wednesday at Lowe's Motor Speedway and will see its first racing action of 2006 as the primary option for Vickers this weekend at Richmond.
HENDRICK GOING FOR EIGHTH WIN:
A NEXTEL Cup win Saturday would be the eighth at Richmond for car owner Rick Hendrick. With seven victories, he is currently tied with Junior Johnson and Bud Moore for second on the track's all-time win list. Petty Engineering has won 15 races there.
MOST RECENT '25' WIN CAME AT RICHMOND:
The No. 25 Hendrick Motorsports team earned its last NEXTEL Cup victory at Richmond in May 2003, with driver Joe Nemechek visiting Victory Lane after starting from the outside pole position. At the time, Vickers was in the midst of his 2003 Busch Series championship season.
VICKERS SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS FRIDAY:
Following the completion of NEXTEL Cup final practice on Friday, Brian Vickers will greet fans and sign autographs at the GMAC Racing souvenir hauler outside Richmond International Raceway beginning at 3:30 p.m. local time.
BRIAN VICKERS, DRIVER OF THE NO. 25 GMAC CHEVROLETS:
(COULD YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY TO SECURE YOUR FIRST CUP SERIES WIN AT TALLADEGA?) "You always think there's something you could have done differently. Maybe not let them (his competitors) get so far back. What happens is you try to back the car up behind you and then they get side-by-side and they keeping dropping back, so then they have a run when they catch you. I wish I would've pulled harder down to the bottom to block Jimmie (Johnson), but we could've wrecked, too. You never know. It was still a good day for the GMAC crew."
VICKERS:
(AFTER HAVING THE KIND OF WEEKEND YOU DID IN TALLADEGA IN BOTH THE BUSCH AND CUP SERIES, WHAT DOES THAT DO FOR YOUR CONFIDENCE?) "Every little bit helps. We haven't run particularly well at Richmond as of late, so hopefully the momentum gained from this weekend will carry over. With the postponement of the race and testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway, it's been a short week for everybody, especially the crew guys. Maybe our third-place finish will give us the extra bit of energy we need for Richmond."
VICKERS:
(HOW WAS THE RICHMOND TEST FOR THE GMAC RACING TEAM?) "We haven't been the best we can be at Richmond. The last three races for us have been tough, but hopefully we have things in order for our next shot at it. We left the test happy, even though we crashed one of our cars on the first day. We pulled out the backup car and had it running well by the end. We never made a qualifying attempt, but our car was really strong on long runs."
VICKERS:
(HOW FRUSTRATING IS IT TO HAVE COME SO CLOSE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO GETTING YOUR FIRST WIN?) "As much as I want to win and as much as everyone on our GMAC Racing team wants to win, we don't dwell on the near-misses. It doesn't keep me awake at night. Odds are, if we keep putting ourselves in a position to win races, eventually things will work out. Sure, we go into every race wanting to it to happen, but you have to make the best of what you have every week and build consistency."
