Martin Truex Jr. was posted the fastest overall speed during the final practice session for Sunday’s race at New Hampshire International Speedway. David Stremme (fourth) and Reed Sorenson (10th) were also among the top-10 in the session.
MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 1 BASS PRO SHOPS/TRACKER CHEVROLET: YOU WERE THE QUICKEST IN THE FINAL PRACTICE SESSION TODAY. “It’s a good feeling [smiles]. It’s exciting. It’s been a while since we’ve done something like that. It’s cool. I don’t want to get my hopes up too high because this deal is tough and we probably weren’t quite as good as we need to be right at the end of practice. But it’s pretty cool to be able to do that. We haven’t done it in quite a while and it’s exciting for us.” ARE THE SPEEDS FROM HAPPY HOUR A GOOD INDICATION OF HOW GOOD YOUR CAR IS IN RACE TRIM? “I think so. Obviously this place changes. It gets tighter the more cars that run the more rubber is put down on the track and the Busch race will only make that worse today. We were a little tight at the end of practice and we’ll probably be even tighter tomorrow. We’ve got some work to do but I feel like it’s a car that you can work on. We unloaded yesterday and we weren’t very good at all and the guys just kept working and working. We worked real hard together and I’m real proud of them for that. That’s a big deal, when you come to the track and you’re not good and you find ways to make your car good. I’m real proud of them. They’re always working hard and they never get down. We just need to keep doing this. It’s cool to come to the track like this where I’ve got a lot of experience and know what I need and there’s no question in my mind that I know what I need. I can say it. I’m not worried about asking for something today and it screwing us up tomorrow. I know what I need and that helps. As we get back to all these other tracks, that’s going to be the same way.” WHAT HAS RUNNING WELL THIS WEEKEND DONE FOR THE MORALE OF THE TEAM? “Well, anytime you run good it’s good for the guys because they work so hard. They need to get something out of it, not just working their guts out and getting nothing. That stinks and nobody like that. They really appreciate it and they’re really
excited about the car and they feel like we can have a good strong run. We might not be the best car here. We might not be the car to beat right now but we’re working on it. If we can just do a few things right for tomorrow we’ll have a shot at it and that’s all we can ask for right now.” IS THIS A NEW CAR? “No, this is the car that we ran real well at Phoenix with and real well at Richmond with until it blew up. We’ve had a few good runs with it. We qualified and ran in the top-10 at Phoenix and Richmond we were looking at a top-10 finish when we broke a motor. It’s been a pretty good car for us.”
REED SORENSON, No. 41 TARGET DODGE: ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE CAR? “Yeah, we’re pretty happy with it. We feel like we’re a top-10 car. We just need to get a little bit better. It’s a little tight in the center. We tried to fix it the whole practice there and never really found one thing to make it a lot better. We’re still working on it.” YOU WERE QUICKEST IN THE FIRST PRACTICE SESSION TODAY. “The second practice, it was just as good, we just didn’t run as fast of a lap. We just need to get it a little bit better in the center of the corner and I think we’ll have a really good car to race with and be able to pass. Right now it runs good by itself. It’s just going to be hard to pass with it tight in the center.” ARE THE SPEEDS FROM HAPPY HOUR A GOOD INDICATION OF HOW GOOD YOUR CAR IS IN RACE TRIM? “It seems to be because the tires don’t fall off as bad. We went out and could run within a tenth of our fastest time after 10 laps on the tires so the tires didn’t fall off a lot. Tomorrow will be a little different story when you have to run 80 laps on your tires and you run a green-flag run and your brakes get hot and things like that. You’re going to have to lifting sooner and getting a little bit easier into the corners. The times are going to be a lot slower in the race so if somebody has a car that is handling really good and they’re not turning the fastest lap times you can still have a good racecar.” DOES THIS TRACK FIT YOUR DRIVING STYLE? “I do like it. I’ve only been here one time. My Busch car was really good here yesterday and the Cup car was good yesterday, and we feel like if we can just get a little bit better we’re going to be really good.”
DAVID STREMME, No. 40 COORS LIGHT DODGE: “Like I said and Reed said earlier this weekend, we’ve got all brand-new racecars this weekend. Guys did a good
job in the shop. We’re just getting more time on them and getting more acclimated to what they like. Things seem to be going pretty good.” WHAT HAS RUNNING WELL THIS WEEKEND DONE FOR THE MORALE OF THE TEAM? “Every weekend we’ve been running better and it helps the team morale. The biggest thing is that our organization is going through a lot of changes. It’s not going to show up within a week or two. It’s going to take time. We keep getting better every week and that’s all we can do, like this car. It’s a new car. It’s nothing different, like far off from what we’ve been running, just a lot of different ideas in it, and it seems to work pretty good.” ARE THE SPEEDS FROM HAPPY HOUR A GOOD INDICATION OF HOW GOOD YOUR CAR IS IN RACE TRIM? “Well, you have to stay out of trouble here. Stay out of trouble and make sure that you maintain your stuff. The thing is, we were pretty quick in both sessions and I feel like we’ve got a good competitive car. We didn’t qualify that great because we didn’t have a lot of time on our car and we couldn’t go in the position we’re in making big changes and stuff. But for the most part you’ve got the same group of guys every week that are fast and you’ve got to race them and then you probably have a handful of guys that will probably run good and a handful that will surprise you and won’t run good. Like [Tony] Glover just told us, we’ve got to cross our Ts and dot our Is and we’ll be good.” CAN YOU PASS HERE? “I think so. My car feels good enough that I can drive through the field. This is the best short track car that I’ve ever had. And it’s not that I’ve changed anything, it’s just that it’s that much better. They guys have worked really good and I’m getting it.” YOU MUST HAVE A LOT OF PATIENCE IN THE RACE. “It’s not a long race but it’s still long enough to get you in trouble. We need to take care of our brakes, take care of our equipment, fenders on the car and everything and just be there at the end.” COMMENT ON RACING AT POCONO NEXT WEEK. “I can’t wait [smiles].” CAN YOU TAKE THE CAR THAT YOU ARE RACING HERE THIS WEEKEND? “We actually have another car that we ran at Pocono there a few weeks ago and it was pretty good. The biggest thing I look at is that we’re going back to a place that we have a notebook for that I have some track time on
now. We run pretty decent. We felt that we made some mistakes throughout the race that hurt our finish. We go on there and get a top-15 or top-10, that would be happy for us.”
