DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FEDEX GROUND CHEVROLET: “I respect Mark Martin like no other. I understand he’s trying to get his lap back, but gosh, you’ve got to give room to the lead lap cars. This is what happens. The 6 car was a lap down and he bounced off the wall and came into me. This ain’t the first time. At Las Vegas he ran me into the wall. There’s so many races that I can say that the 6 car didn’t give me any room. I understand I’m the rookie and he’s the veteran but we’re all on the same racetrack. You’ve got to give room. He just crowded me every time I was around him. What cut my tire had nothing to do with that. I think Elliott pinched him up into the wall and he came back down into me. It’s frustrating, being that we came from 41st and got into the top-10. It’s not the way it’s supposed to end.”

DAVID STREMME, No. 40 LONESTAR STEAKHOUSE DODGE: WHAT HAPPENED? “The 21 just wrecked us. I was staying out of everybody’s way and he just turned me right. It’s pretty blatant when it’s in the middle of the straightaway and you get wrecked. I wasn’t blocking him or nothing. He never even got up to me to let me even give me a chance to get over. He just turned me right and just stayed in it and that ruined our day from there. We had a good car. We were running with the top-10 guys there. Like I said, I don’t know what his deal was.”

REED SORENSON IN THE No. 41 TARGET DODGE WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT MARTINSVILLE.
Notes

  • Sorenson finished 12th and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the second time this season and twice in the last three races.
  • Clint Bowyer UNOFFICIALLY holds a five-point advantage (60-55) over J.J. Yeley in the Raybestos Rookie standings after Martinsville.
  • Yeley led once for one lap and is the first Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap in the spring race at Martinsville since Kasey Kahne in 2004. Yeley was the only Raybestos Rookie to lead a lap at Martinsville. He is also the only first-year driver to lead a lap in two short track races this season.
SORENSON: “That was a lot better than we expected it to be. It was definitely a long day but we felt like we had a decent run there. I wish we had a couple more laps there at the end because we had those new tires. I got one but I just didn’t have enough laps to get any more.” YOU NEARLY SCORED A TOP-10 AT A TRACK THAT YOU HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE. “Going into the race we really didn’t have a good car in practice. I had never been here before so we really didn’t know what to expect so we made some changes. I still feel like we can get it a lot better so we’re going to go home and work on it.” IS THIS ANOTHER SMALL STEP TO RUNNING BETTER AND BETTER? “I think so. It’s not like we’ve been bad. We just haven’t had the finishes to show it.” DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE TEAM IS COMING AROUND? “I didn’t really feel like we had any problems beside bad luck and now we have some luck on our side. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO RACE HERE? “It’s hard [SMILES].”

J.J YELEY, No. 18 INTERSTATE BATTERIES CHEVROLET: YOU RAN WELL ALL DAY. “It would have been an excellent run for the Interstate Batteries Chevrolet. I guess I understand why people have their run-ins with Kurt Busch now. I never had a problem with him before. I ran him clean all day. He let me go early, racing him real hard there for 11th; I was definitely faster than he was. I got underneath him two or three times, no big deal. Going into 1 I had a good run, was clear up to his left-rear tire and the guy comes down and he hits me in the right front and gets himself loose and then he shoves me off into 3, shoves me out of the groove and then he tried to run me in the front straightaway fence and cut down the left-front tire. It’s a shame. We battled all day long. This is a real long race. I spent so much time trying to take it easy and to get taken out by a guy that just thought the racetrack was his is very disappointing. I think we definitely should have run in the top-10 and unfortunately we were able to crack the top-20.” HOW DIFFICULT IS THIS TRACK? “It’s really not too bad. This place is different than Bristol. You can change lanes and make the car better. At Bristol, if you’re not good on the bottom you’re pretty much in trouble. I think you can race a little harder here. It’s still give and take no matter what kind of short track you’re on. You’ve got to hope that the guys out there will race with a little more respect.” WAS THIS A PHYSICAL RACE? “It was hot out there. Of course, it’s hard to tell if that’s from just being on a short track or just because this is the first race that we’ve had that it’s been over 60 degrees [LAUGHS].”

JIMMY ELLEDGE, CREW CHIEF, No. 41 TARGET DODGE: “I don’t know any of the stats, but I think that’s the best that I’ve been here with a Raybestos Rookie. Reed did a great job and I thought he drove a really good race. We really probably could have been better than our finish there if we had maybe pitted when the 25 and those guys did on that one deal instead of pitting there at the end. If we had some more laps we probably could have got some more positions but still that’s an outstanding run.” IT MUST GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE AS A CREW CHIEF TO RUN WELL HERE WITH A DRIVER THAT HAD NOT SEEN THIS TRACK BEFORE THIS WEEKEND. “I’ve felt this way since about the second race with him. It’s like ‘Man, I think he’s potentially a star.’ And if we can just keep up with him and keep him in competitive equipment and do our job we’ll be there. To come here and perform like that and like you said never see the place, I kind of figured that might be the case just by how well he’s picked up on everything else and how well I thought he was. I think that’s incredible. You look at all the Raybestos Rookies: Denny is the only one that had any experience here and he came here last year and performed well his first time. That’s a tough rookie crowd. Those guys are the future of the sport right now.” COMMENT ON TEXAS. “I’m really looking forward to Texas. We’re ran top-five there both races there last year with Casey. We’re taking a brand new car that it shows to be our best car. We’ll see what happens. I’m really looking forward to it. I feel good about our mile-and-a-half cars and I feel like every one of them is good now. That one car we run so much last year we ran at California this year and crashed at Vegas. We run a different one at Atlanta and run in the top-10 with it and everyone that we’ve tested against that good car has been good. I feel real confident in our mile-and-a-half stuff and obviously now I think we’ve got a decent short track program. We can build on it and I think we’ve got some shots at some wins here by mid-season.” ARE YOU SATISFIED WHERE THIS 41 TEAM IS AT THIS POINT OF THE SEASON? “Absolutely. Thanks to Casey, we were able to build this thing from basically scratch three years ago. I really expected Reed’s learning curve to kind of take a little bit longer. I figured we’d have to take maybe the first quarter of the year or the first half of the year to get it acclimated and get everything right. But I feel like he’s pretty much picked up. He’s at our level and I think we have to work hard to continue to get better. We’ve got to get our pit crew a little bit better. We’ve got some new cars that are coming up to run that show to be better. If those things play out, I think we’ll be in good shape. I’m really proud of the team and the company where it’s at. I think we’ve got a lot of good things going on and a lot of good things to be proud of and I think it’s a sign of things to come. If we hadn’t had some of the luck-things to happen to us at the beginning of the year… We’ve had top-10 cars every race that we’ve been in. We were 12th in the Daytona 500 on a green-white-checkered and got a flat tire. We were running fourth at California and had a pit stop mistake. Blew a tire at Vegas and at Atlanta run in the top-10. We’re probably run a little bit better than I expected. If we get the wrinkles ironed out of this thing I think that you guys will be really impressed, will be wondering where we came from.”

STEVE ADDINGTON, CREW CHIEF, No. 18 INTERSTATE BATTERIES CHEVROLET: “I think we had a top-10 car. We ran some lap times that probably could have been with the Hendrick cars and of course, Tony’s car was really stout. I mean J.J. did an awesome job. The first time he had ever seen the racetrack was Friday morning. He came in here open minded. He let us do the changes on the car. We got him a good balance for the car and he did a whale of a job all day long for us. He didn’t do anything wrong. The 2 car just got into him and knocked him up the racetrack. J.J. got under him down here [points to turns 1 and 2] twice and he checked up the first time. He got under him and slid him up the racetrack and he just retaliated on the other end. We’ll take it and go to Texas.”
