WIX FILTERS LAP LEADER NOTES FOR THE GFS MARKETPLACE 400 NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES RACE AT MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY, AUGUST 20, 2006.
Matt Kenseth led six times for 87 laps to win the WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race award in the GFS Marketplace 400. Kenseth claimed the honor for the third time this season. He has led 51 times in 15 races for a total of 736 laps this season. Kenseth led the most laps for the first time since Chicagoland, five races ago.
Kenseth won Sunday’s race at Michigan, crossing the finish line .622 seconds ahead of second-place Jeff Gordon. The win was Kenseth’s third of the season and his second victory at Michigan. He scored his 11th victory on a superspeedway. His last win at Michigan came in June 2002.
The victory was Kenseth’s 12th top-five and 13th top-10 finish this season.
Kenseth is second in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings, 58 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson.
Kenseth quotes: “I’m surprised we led all those laps to win the WIX Filters Lap Leader Award. That’s awesome. I’m glad we led them there at the end when it counted. We had to work on it all day to get it that good then.”
