GFS Marketplace 400 - Rookie Post-Race Quotes

Where the Raybestos Rookies finished at Michigan:
Sorenson 8th
Hamlin 9th
Stremme 28th
Truex Jr. 30th
Bowyer 33rd
Yeley 37th

J.J. YELEY, No. 18 HUSQVARNA CHEVROLET: “The car just jumped sideways going into 3. It was a little bit free on exit and never really had much of an issue in entry. It jumped sideways so quickly I’m not sure if I maybe cut a right-rear tire down going down the back straightaway. I went into 1 and everything was fine and come off and was just trying to reel those guys back in, went in and the car jumped sideways. I couldn’t save it, tried to lock it up and keep the thing from hitting the fence and couldn’t keep it out of the fence.” YOU RAN WELL BEFORE THAT. “Yeah, you know the car was real good. I know that we’ve had some bad luck the last two weeks and the main goal was to ride around and wait until maybe 20 or 30 laps to go and then make sure that we had a good solid car and go racing. I was running around some guys that were wanting to run a lot harder than I was just and I was just letting them go, trying to be smart and I still couldn’t keep it out of trouble, unfortunately. It’s very, very disappointing. The guys have been working their butts off. We definitely had a good enough racecar.”

REED SORENSON IN THE No. 41 TARGET DODGE WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE AT MICHIGAN.

Notes:

  • Sorenson finished eighth and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the fifth time this season. He was also the top Raybestos Rookie in the June race at Michigan, scoring a fifth-place finish.
  • Sorenson scored his fifth top-10 finish of the season and first since he placed seventh at Chicagoland (race No. 18).
  • THE STREAK STAYS ALIVE: A Raybestos® Rookie has finished in the top 15 in all 23 races this season.
  • DID YOU KNOW? Clint Bowyer led today’s race twice for six laps. A Raybestos® Rookie has now led at least one lap in each of the past EIGHT CONSECUTIVE August races at Michigan. The others:
1999: Tony Stewart (led twice for 4 laps)
2000: Dale Earnhardt Jr. (led once for 13 laps)
2001: Ron Hornaday (led once for three laps)
2002: Ryan Newman (led once for one lap)
2003: Greg Biffle (led once for 19 laps)
2004: Kasey Kahne (twice for six laps)
2004: Scott Riggs (twice for 12 laps)
2004: Scott Wimmer (once for three laps)
2004: Brendan Gaughan (once for two laps)
2005: Kyle Busch (once for 28 laps)
  • Denny Hamlin is UNOFFICIALLY eighth in the NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings, two points behind seventh-place Kyle Busch. He is four points ahead of ninth-place Jeff Burton and 39 in front of 10th-place Dale Earnhardt Jr.
  • DID YOU KNOW? A Raybestos® Rookie has now finished in the top-10 in SEVEN of the past EIGHT August races at Michigan. The others:
    1999: Tony Stewart, third
    2000: Matt Kenseth, eighth
    2001: Casey Atwood, 10th
    2002: Jimmie Johnson, seventh
    2003: Greg Biffle, fourth
    2004: Kasey Kahne, fifth

SORENSON: “It was a solid day for us, nothing fantastic, nothing bad. It was a good, solid top-10.” WHAT DOES A DAY LIKE TODAY DO FOR YOUR CONFIDENCE? “It’s consistency. I mean that’s what we need to be doing. We’ve got to get top-10s before we can get top-fives and then you can go to wins. We’ve just got to get consistent where we’re at and then we’ll just try to keep getting better.” THIS HAS TO BE YOUR FAVORITE CAR. “This one is pretty good for us. I think it finished seventh last time and eighth this time. It’s been a good car. We’ll use it again this year, for sure [smiles].” WOULD A CAUTION HAVE HELPED YOU THERE AT THE END OF THE RACE? “I don’t think so. Our car got a little tight there at the end. I don’t think it was going to be better if we had a caution or anything like that. It was good for about 20 laps and then it kind of slowed down a little bit. A 20-lap shootout would have been good for us with new tires [smiles].” YOU ARE GOING TO TRACKS FOR A SECOND TIME SO YOU HAVE SOME NOTES. “We know what not to do at a lot of these places. And some places we’ve been pretty good and just had some bad luck. We’re going to go back to some of these tracks where we can learn from our mistakes or just try not to have any bad luck and we’ll be okay.”

DENNY HAMLIN IN THE No. 11 FEDEX FREIGHT CHEVROLET FINISHED NINTH, HIS 11TH TOP-10 FINISH OF THE SEASON. THIS IS HAMLIN’S FIFTH CONSECUTIVE TOP-10 FINISH. “We weren’t that great. We battled back there at the end. I know the potential of our car and I feel like we could have easily ended up top-five had we been just a little bit better.” THIS TEAM CONTINUES TO IMPRESS. YOU ARE STILL IN THE TOP-10 “We’re by no means a sure thing in there. We’re trying to survive and do all we can but still, it’s another top-10 run for us and that’s good. It feels good to struggle and still run top-10. That’s a good thing for us.” WAS YOUR CAR LOOSE ALL DAY? “We were really, really loose the first half of the race and super, super tight at the end. We just had the balance that we struggled to find. Hopefully we’ll go get ‘em at Fontana.” DO YOU KNOW WHAT NOT TO DO AT FONTANA? “I think we really just have to change our whole front end package back to what it was with this car. If we do that I think we’ll be in good shape.”

JIMMY ELLEDGE, CREW CHIEF, No. 41 TARGET DODGE: “We seemed to off just a little tiny bit on the strategy there. It seems like we’re always chasing track position instead of having it. It was a real good run. I was really proud of everybody. They did a good job. Anytime you can finish in the single digits is great. We’ll just keep building on it and get us a win sooner or later.” ARE YOU GETTING STRONGER AND STRONGER AS THE SEASON ROLLS ALONG? “I think so. I think we’ve kind of stalled out as far as just trying to get all our chemistry working and things like that and we haven’t really been able to get our cars a little bit better, not knowing what to do to ‘em to make ‘em better. I think we’ve got some direction on some things. We’ve got some new stuff coming. We’ll have a new car at California. We had a new short track car that we had at Loudon so I feel good about our short track stuff and obviously you can’t feel bad about something that runs in the top-10 on the big tracks. We seem to get a little bit better and I think we can contend with them. It’s just so hard these days. You’ve got to do the right things at the right time and it’s all got to work out perfect.”

GIL MARTIN, CREW CHIEF, No. 07 JACK DANIEL’S DOWNHOME PUNCH CHEVROLET: “What can you say? I mean it was a great day. The guys in the pits did a great job; the guys building the car did a great job. Our engine shop has done a phenomenal job all year long. They’ve taken a beating the last few years but those guys have done an amazing job, such a turnaround. I’m behind them 100 percent. This was a freak deal right here. What else can you say? Everybody did a great job. This team is really coming around. I couldn’t be prouder of all of them, from the chassis shop all the way to the motor shop. Everybody has done a great job.” DID YOU AND THE 31 HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM? “No, it wasn’t a related incident at all. It looks like we just ran out of oil. It’s easy to be disappointed right now but what a great day for this team. It’s come so far and I look forward to great things in the next few weeks.” WAS THE CALL FOR TWO TIRES ON THAT LAST STOP A BIG GAMBLE? “I don’t think so. We did it twice during the race and actually, our car was just as fast on two as it was four and we only had 19 laps on the left-sides. Clean air was going to overcome the two tires. I was quite surprised that many more of them didn’t do two tires because clean air was worth way more than left-sides. I don’t think it was a gamble. Heck, we’re living to win right now. We’re living on the edge anyway. If you’re not on the edge right now, you’re taking up too much space.”

DAVID STREMME, No. 40 COORS LIGHT DODGE: “That earlier accident definitely didn't. help our run here today, but we overcame a lot to get out with a better finish than we thought we would after the early set back. We were battling a loose condition all day but the No. 40. Coors Light Dodge did come around there toward the end. There were good calls and moves made on pit road today so it does feel good to know we fought back and finished on the lead lap as a result of it.”
