GFS Marketplace 400 - Kyle Busch Notes

PREVIEW: KYLE BUSCH (NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET)
VENUE: MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY (TWO-MILE OVAL)
CIRCUIT: NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES (RACE 23 OF 36)
EVENT: SUNDAY, AUG. 20 (200 LAPS, 400 MILES)

DELPHI ON THE '5' AT MIS: Kyle Busch's No. 5 Chevrolet will feature the red and white Delphi oval in Sunday's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway. It will mark the third of four appearances of the Delphi design this season. The paint scheme will show up again at Lowe's Motor Speedway in October.

BUSCH ON A ROLL: Sunday's ninth-place finish at Watkins Glen, N.Y., marked Busch's eighth consecutive top-15 finish, a streak that began with the June 18 Michigan race. It was also his 12th top-10 finish of 2006, making him one of just six drivers with at least a dozen top-10s.

MICHIGAN STATS: In his three NEXTEL Cup starts at Michigan, Busch has two top-15 finishes. He led 28 laps last August before a mechanical failure relegated him to a 43rd-place result.

CAR SELECTION: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 388 as the team's primary option this weekend at Michigan. It is the same car Busch drove to a 14th-place finish in June's rain-shortened Michigan event.

FIVE TIMES A LUCKY DOG: Busch was the beneficiary of five consecutive Lucky Dog passes on Sunday at Watkins Glen, setting a NEXTEL Cup record. The Lucky Dog rule was first implemented as a safety precaution at Dover, Del., in September 2003 to prevent lap-down cars from racing back to caution flags.

BUSCH FOURTH AT BERLIN: Busch recorded a top-five finish in Wednesday night's late model race at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Mich. He started 17th and drove to fourth in the 100-lap feature.

FOOD CITY APPEARANCE IN BRISTOL: Busch will sign autographs on behalf of Kellogg's at Food City Race Night on State Street in Bristol, Tenn., on Thursday, Aug. 24 beginning at 6 p.m. local time.

KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET: (ON RACING AT MICHIGAN.) "It's definitely a track that owes us one. We had a great run going a year ago and a hot dog wrapper got stuck on the grill, causing us to overheat. In the spring we came back through the field twice before the rain stopped the race early. We're taking the same car back so it should be a good race."

BUSCH: (ON GETTING FIVE LUCKY DOG PASSES AT WATKINS GLEN.) "It's going to draw criticism, but everyone has benefited from the Lucky Dog at one time or another. It was just our day. If we were able to line up double-file on the restarts, we would have gotten the laps back anyway because we had that fast of a car. What people don't realize is that when we got back on the lead lap we drove from 40th to ninth in just 20 laps."

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET: (ON THE CHASE.) "The race to the Chase is starting to shape up. We dodged a bullet by finishing ninth at Watkins Glen and held onto the fifth position (in the standings). We want to stay right where we're at and we've got Bristol (Tenn.) coming up so our focus remains on getting the best finishes out of each race."

GUSTAFSON: (ON OVERCOMING OBSTACLES AT WATKINS GLEN.) "Unless you were there, it's hard to describe. This Kellogg's team just reacted to our problem, didn't panic, overcame it and never gave up. You would have thought we won the race the way we were celebrating in the pits each time we got a lap back. Even though I would have never thought we'd catch so many breaks, the bottom line is that car was good enough to contend for the win. It might have seemed too easy to catch the Lucky Dog pass, but it wasn't that easy to drive through the field as the race was winding down. It was a well-deserved top-10."
