Dodge/Save Mart 350 - Rookie Qualifying Quotes

Where the Raybestos Rookies qualified at Infineon:
Bowyer 28th
Yeley 40th
Truex Jr. 41st
Hamlin 42nd
Sorenson 43rd

J.J. YELEY, No. 18 INTERSTATE BATTERIES CHEVROLET: YOU KEPT ALL FOUR FENDERS ON IT AND RAN A LITTLE BIT QUICKER THAN YOU DID IN PRACTICE. “None of those are any good. The car drove real good. I just didn’t want to do anything that I was going to pay for in the long run. Unfortunately, I didn’t get through 10 very good. I got in good, just didn’t slow down enough there coming back off to get down the front straightaway. I pushed up out of the groove and lost a ton of time. You have to get off that corner especially good because of the long straightaway and just screwed it up. It was a little bit better but in qualifying trim we should have been at least a second faster. I know the track might be a little bit slower because it’s hotter. Just didn’t do a very good lap.” CAN YOU TELL THE TRACK GETS GREASY AND SLICK WITH THE HOT WEATHER? “We’ve struggled with forward bite for most of the day but I’ve never been here before and I don’t know what the real characteristics of the racetrack are supposed to be. We worked on that most of the race runs and got to where we were really comfortable with the racetrack and racecar. That’s the problem with road course racing: you’ve got one shot at it and one lap and a lot of corners to mess up. Unfortunately I waited until the last one to screw it up.”

MARTIN TRUEX JR., BASS PRO SHOPS/TRACKER BOATS CHEVROLET: “It wasn’t pretty. We weren’t that bad in practice, just real loose and it’s really hot out there now and we were even looser. I just couldn’t do anything. I screwed up about four corners and that’s huge. You’ve got to hit them all right to have a decent lap. I just kept getting loose and sliding out and not hitting my line. I had a little trouble with the transmission on one of the shifts, too. It’s a terrible lap. I was optimistic after practice. We were running okay. In race trim we were pretty decent but can’t get any speed out of it. It’s just too slick.” HOW DOES INFINEON RACEWAY COMPARE TO WATKINS GLEN AND MEXICO CITY? “There’s no room for error here, especially today with it being as slick as it is. It’s hard to get grip out there especially with these cars. You’ve got a lot of horsepower. You can’t touch the gas and when you can’t do that, you can’t go fast.”

CLINT BOWYER IN THE No. 07 JACK DANIEL’S CHEVROLET WAS THE TOP RAYBESTOS ROOKIE QUALIFIER AT INFINEON RACEWAY. “I have to learn from it. Just got on the curb a little too much. I kind of made a Raybestos Rookie mistake but only having one lap and three hours to sit there and think about it just gave me too long to think about it [smiles].” YOU SEEMED TO FIND SOMETHING AT THE END OF PRACTICE, MOVING UP A LITTLE ON THE SPEED CHART. “We just kept getting better and better. I was hoping I could qualify a lot better than that. I slowed down quite a bit from practice so that wasn’t very good.” WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET A LITTLE TRACK POSITION? “I’m sure. You do whatever you can do. I’ll let Gil [Martin, crew chief] and the boys worry about that.”
