KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger) – Finished 5th
“Gordon was definitely the class of the field today. The team did a great job with adjustments. It was a nice steady day for us. We led some laps. We came out just behind them on our pit sequence. We were able to pass a few guys, but right there at the end it was all about track position. Ryan Newman, my teammate, and I used the same setup. That was great. Both of us have limited road racing experience. Maybe we learned something today for the future.
“We tweaked on our setup and we ended up going back to our original starting point, so we didn’t quite learn what we needed to during the race, but it was a nice solid day. We set ourselves on a solid pace, and that’s how we made it to the end. It was a nice top-five finish. I thought we could run just as good as Newman and he finished second. They all came out ahead of us on the pit sequence. We raced with them. We held off Boris Said down the stretch, so it was a good day for the Miller Lite Dodge. That’s three good runs in a row and we’ll just keep getting it hopefully.
“It’s been great to come from my team and then their experience with Rusty. We were running on adrenaline early on. Now we’re starting to click. There’s plenty of time left for things to go right, and there’s plenty of time for things to go wrong. We feel like we we’re poised to do what we need to do.”
RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger) – Finished 2nd
“I wish we could have won the race, but at least we had ourselves in position. We got our second top five of the season, and I’m ready for Daytona. The red flag hurt me a little bit. I’m a little sore. I was quicker than Jeff Gordon at the start of the day. He was quicker at the start of a run, and I was quicker at the end of a run. It was the end of the run, so Terry blocked me and held me up a little bit. He did what he needed to do, and I’m happy we finished second.
“It was a good day for the Alltel Dodge. It was our second top five finish of the season. It’s pretty late in the season for that, but it was a good effort by Penske Racing. I appreciate the opportunity to drive the car and finish second.
“He (Terry Labonte) was definitely holding me up a little bit. He definitely made it hard, but that’s his job. There’s two good passing zones at this racetrack, and I got him at one of them. The heat was bad. I had a cramp in my left butt cheek, and it’s still there, so I’m trying to get out of here.
“We’ve improved upon our finishes here in the past, so it’s an opportunity for us to come back next year and improve a little more and be at the right position at the right time. We ran second at Watkins Glen in 2002 or 2003. We just need track position. We’ve had tires spin here. We’ve had brake problems. Things went right for us today and we came away with a second-place finish. About lap 60 I started hurting pretty good. On every caution I tried to lift my butt up in the seat and that’s hard to do when you’ve got your seat belt strapped in tight.
“It’s significant from where we finished, but we didn’t look at it as that significant coming in. We didn’t say this is the place we’ve got to turn our season around.”
KASEY KAHNE (No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW/SRT Dodge Charger) – Finished 31st
“We had a good car today. It was fine 20 laps in. We were hitting our marks and easily had a top 10 car. I felt good the whole time in the car. I never had a problem with the heat. I feel like we’re getting a handle on the road courses. It just takes time. This was our best finish here and it could have been a lot better if we hadn’t had a flat tire at the end.”
SCOTT RIGGS (No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge Charger) – Finished 27th
“The foot didn't really bother me too bad. It was sore for sure, but you forget all about it when you are racing. This was not the finish that we wanted, but we will take it. I have some improving I need to do on these road courses, but we will also work on improving the car and the setup before Watkins Glen. I am proud of these guys for working hard all weekend. We came back from being a lap down at one point and having a flat tire under green to finish about where we qualified. The Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge was the best it had been all race at the end.”
BOBBY LABONTE (No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge Charger) – Finished 35th
“I put myself out of the race a couple of times today at least. That really got us behind. The 18 car got spun out by somebody he said. The 88 hit somebody and I hit the 88 and knocked the radiator out. It ended our day. My bad for the day.”
