EXPRESS NOTES:
Hamlin to Make Special Delivery…and Special Pickup in Oakland: Hamlin will join Operation FedEx Special Delivery as they visit the Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland on Thursday before traveling to Sonoma County for the race weekend. While at the hospital Hamlin will meet and race radio-controlled cars with the patients, then join with FedEx to present the hospital with a donation of $25,000.

Hamlin also will be presented with a specially designed FedEx Freight race helmet to wear this weekend. The designer of Hamlin’s Sonoma helmet is 8-year old NASCAR fan Kurtis Meek. (Images of the helmet and event are available)

“I have been fortunate to meet some remarkable kids through our hospital visits and they always seem to bring me good luck,” said Hamlin. “They design really cool helmet s for me to wear that show how much they love racing and I think it’s a great way to honor them, to take them to the track with me for the weekend. I almost left Richmond with a win wearing a helmet a patient designed for me so I am hoping we have the same kind of run this weekend.”

Hamlin’s Road Course Experience: The Dodge/Save Mart 350 will mark Hamlin’s first Cup start at a road course. Hamlin has three road course starts in the Busch Series and scored his first Busch Series win on a road course in March of 2006 at the Telcel Motorola 200.

Hamlin’s road course preparation dates back to January of 2005 when he visited the Bondurant School and received instruction from famed Corvette road course driver Bill Cooper. He has tested Virginia International Raceway and Watkins Glen before running Busch Series races at Mexico and Watkins Glen. He tested Nextel Cup cars at Virginia International Raceway on June 13.

Double Duty – Sonoma to Milwaukee: On another non-companion race weekend, Denny Hamlin will travel between Northern California and Wisconsin to run in both the Busch and Nextel Cup series. Hamlin will fly to Milwaukee Saturday to race at the Milwaukee Mile, then return to Sonoma in preparation for the Dodge/Save Mart 350 on Sunday afternoon at Infineon.

2006 Points: Hamlin’s 12th-place finish at Sonoma keeps the #11 in ninth place in the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup standings heading to Sonoma this weekend. Hamlin currently sits 40 points behind Kevin Harvick in eighth and 486 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson.

2006 Rookie Race: Despite breaking his string of five consecutive Rookie of the Race awards, Hamlin increased his lead in the Raybestos Rookie standing over second-place Clint Bowyer to 29 points (174-145). Hamlin has been the top rookie finisher in eight of fifteen races.

Sonoma Chassis JGR 80/79: The #11 FedEx Team will roll out car JGR 80 this weekend at Infineon. This car has recorded two top-ten finishes at Infineon with Bobby Labonte posting a ninth-place finish in June of 2003 and Terry Labonte coming in eighth at the track in June of 2005. Terry Labonte recorded a 35th place finish in this car at Watkins Glen in August of 2005 after being forced from the race with transmission problems. JGR 79 has served as a backup on six occasions since 2003 but has yet to start a Nextel Cup race.

FedEx Freight Car at Infineon: Hamlin’s #11 Chevrolet will sport the FedEx Freight colors for the fourth time this season this weekend at Infineon. Throughout the season, Hamlin and FedEx Racing will feature schemes representing four of the FedEx operating companies; FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight and FedEx Kinko’s

Hamlin on Running Road Courses: “I can honestly say I look forward to running road courses. I think my background running flat tracks has really helped me learn how to run a road course. I felt it really helped me in the Busch race at Mexico, though I know Infineon features a lot of elevation changes so that will be a change. Joe Gibbs Racing takes a lot of pride in these road course races, our equipment is right there with the best of them, and in Tony we have the best guy going. I’ll no doubt be watching him in hopes of learning a trick or two before Sunday.”
