Allstate 400 at the Brickyard - Rookie Practice Quotes

Raybestos Rookie Practice #2 speeds
Clint Bowyer 6th
Reed Sorenson 8th
Denny Hamlin 10th
David Stremme 15th
Martin Truex Jr. 19th
J.J. Yeley 23rd

Three Raybestos Rookies posted times among the top-10 during today’s second practice session at Indianapolis: Clint Bowyer (sixth), Reed Sorenson (8th) and Denny Hamlin (10th).

Notes:

  • Bowyer was the quickest Raybestos Rookie in both practice sessions. He posted the third-best overall speed in the first session earlier this afternoon.
  • Sorenson crashed his primary car near the end of the second practice and will use a backup car for the remainder of the weekend.

REED SORENSON, No. 41 TARGET DODGE: WHAT HAPPENED? “It got loose. It was our last qualifying run there and got through 4 there really good, probably the best I’ve gotten through 4 all day and then just got really loose in 1 and spun out. The good thing about it is that it’s just qualifying practice and we have all day Saturday to get the other car ready for the race, which is the important part. It hurt us for qualifying, for sure, as far as qualifying tomorrow morning. But as far as getting ready for the race we’ll be fine. We ran the backup car at Atlanta and ran it at Darlington. It’s finished 10th and 10th so it’s got a pretty good record. If it finishes 10th again it wouldn’t be bad. It’s been a good car for us. The places we ran it we didn’t get to test so we feel like we have a little bit better understanding going into this Saturday of practice.”

CLINT BOWYER, No. 07 JACK DANIEL’S CHEVROLET: “This is a really good race car. The Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet is good. I’m real proud of Gil and all the guys. We’ve got a fast hotrod. I knew a couple of weeks ago when we were testing here things were looking good and I think we’re backing that up. Hopefully we can keep it that way, keep it up front; qualify good and keep it up there. So far, so good.” HOW BIG WOULD IT BE FOR YOU AND THE TEAM TO HAVE A GOOD RUN HERE? “It would at least make things a little it better. That’s exactly what we need right now. We’ve got to have a whole string of good runs to get back in the points where we need to be. The Chase is pretty much out of the picture but our goal now is to finish 11th in points and we’ve got to get started on it pretty quick.” IS THAT A REALISTIC GOAL? “Definitely. We’ve got a long ways to go, a lot of racing to do. We had a good meeting right before Daytona last race and set some goals and we’re going to hit them.” HAVE YOU JUST HAD BAD RACING LUCK? “Well, the last three positions in the points I’d call it stupidity [laughs]. You can call it bad luck. It is bad luck on our part, it is unfortunate, but it’s the cards that we’ve been dealt and we’ve got to make the best of them.”

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FEDEX FREIGHT CHEVROLET: “It could be a little bit better. It seemed like we got tighter and tighter as the day went on. We’re average, maybe a little bit better.” WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD QUALIFYING RUN FOR YOU? “We got a terrible draw. We’re like in the 40s so the track is going to get a lot hotter. Maybe top-10, top-15 is looking like that will be good for us.” DID THE TRACK CHANGE A LOT AS THE DAY WENT ON? “It changed quite a bit it seemed like throughout the whole day. The track temperature just got hotter and times seemed to slow down. You’ve just got to allow for it and understand your race car.”

DAVID STREMME, No. 40 COORS LIGHT DODGE: “I think we can still pick up quite a bit. We’re not doing bad. I was just trying to be real cautious right now, trying not to do what Reed just did. We don’t want to tear nothing up. We’re top of the cars that need to get in. I’m real proud of all my guys. We went back and we had a bad weekend at Pocono and worked on some stuff and got a lot better.” HOW MUCH TRACK TIME DO YOU REALLY NEED DURING A WEEKEND? “I think the rookies need more than anybody [smiles]. We’ve never been here. We got to test here and everything. It starts at the shop and that’s what they did on this off weekend, worked hard on the car and got it pretty good.” WHAT WOULD A GOOD RUN HERE ON SUNDAY MEAN FOR THIS TEAM? “It means a lot for the team. I put up a big bonus for all of them [smiles]. They’ve got a lot riding on this, too.”
