Allstate 400 at the Brickyard - Kyle Busch Notes

PREVIEW: KYLE BUSCH (NO. 5 KELLOGG'S/DELPHI CHEVROLET)
VENUE: INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY (2.5-MILE OVAL)
CIRCUIT: NASCAR NEXTEL CUP SERIES (RACE 21 OF 36)
EVENT: SUNDAY, AUG. 6 (160 LAPS, 400 MILES)

DELPHI DONS THE '5': Kyle Busch's No. 5 Chevrolet will carry a special paint scheme this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway featuring the red and white Delphi oval. Indy will mark the second of four appearances of the Delphi design this season.

BIRTHDAY BOYS: Two members of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team will celebrate birthdays over the next week. Crew chief Alan Gustafson will turn 31 on Aug. 5 and team engineer Chris Heroy will be 29 on Aug. 10. Jackman Rick Pigeon had an off-week birthday, turning 31 on July 26.

HOOSIERS ON THE '5': Two crew members of the No. 5 team hail from the Hoosier State. Engineer Chris Heroy grew up in Angola, Ind., and spotter Jeffrey Dickerson is from nearby Muncie, Ind.

PREPPING AT THE BRICKYARD: All four full-time Hendrick Motorsports teams -- Nos. 5, 24, 25 and 48 -- tested at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 11 and 12 in preparation for Sunday's NEXTEL Cup event.

CAR SELECTION: Crew chief Alan Gustafson has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 358 as the primary option for Sunday's race at Indianapolis. It is the same car Busch raced to a 22nd-place finish at Pocono Raceway in June.

KYLE BUSCH, DRIVER OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S/DELPHI CHEVROLET: (WERE YOU ABLE TO LEARN ANYTHING AT THE INDIANAPOLIS TEST?) "We definitely learned something. We got going a little bit faster, then slowed down a bit, and finally got going a little bit faster again. The sun wasn't really out, so the heat wasn't what it's going to be this weekend."

BUSCH: (IS INDY A TRACK THAT IS REALLY SENSITIVE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS?) "I haven't been on it for enough years to tell you what Jeff (Gordon) or Tony Stewart would be able to tell you. Last year it was all sunny -- the whole weekend it was sunny -- and then at the test it was all cloud cover. The test was a lot better than I expected, but our car was still a little bit tighter than we wanted."

BUSCH: (WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER ROOKIES RACING AT INDY FOR THE FIRST TIME?) "They're in for a big surprise. I can't explain it. You just can't picture it (as a rookie). Before I went there I thought I pictured it pretty well and I wasn't even close. What you see on TV doesn't do that place justice. The Brickyard race is just about as big as the Daytona 500. It's one of the biggest races that we have on the circuit, so to be able to run there is extra special."

BUSCH: (WHAT'S GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND DURING THE PRE-RACE ACTIVITIES AT INDY?) "'Can we get in the car and go now?' That's my thought, really. Indy has a little bit longer of a pre-race ceremony than most places we go. It's a great show for the fans and keeps people coming back. Sometimes it can be a little bit of a boring race, but hopefully this year will be different and we can have a good one that fans will love."

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF OF THE NO. 5 KELLOGG'S/DELPHI CHEVROLET: (ON THE BRICKYARD.) "If there's a race out there I want to win, it's Indy. We struggled a little in Pocono, but we were good at the Indy test. The car we're taking to Indy is the better of the two cars we had to decide on for Pocono, so I feel like our chances are a little better at Indy for a good performance. If we can come from 43rd to 12th at Pocono, we can certainly figure out what we need to do at Indy."

GUSTAFSON: (ON FINDING BRICKS NEAR THE SPEEDWAY.) "I'm a sentimental guy [LAUGHS]. At last year's test when we were rookies, a bunch of us -- Kyle, our engineers Chris Heroy and Chad Walter, our shock guy Lee Deese and a few others -- went searching in this creek on speedway property for actual old bricks they've dumped from years past. I cleaned up my brick and it has a date on it and everything from the old company that used to make the bricks that paved the track."
