JEREMY MAYFIELD QUOTES
“Good solid teams that can handle bad seasons and stick together, those are the ones that build championship teams. I want to win more than anybody out here. It kills me every day that we’re not running well. Ray (Evernham) knows what’s going on. He’s on top of everything here. He knows the No. 9 car is running good and he knows we’re not, but he also knows its not one person’s fault. He understands. That’s a good thing having an owner like that. He’s not going to underestimate anybody. He knows we have good people, good resources and that it’ll all work out. We will be back. I’ll make sure of that.
“We had good cars at Charlotte for both races. We had the best car at the all-star race I’ve had in two years. The car for the 600 was good. We’re getting the balance I like. It’s not what Kasey likes or what Scott (Riggs) likes. It’s what Jeremy likes. Watch this team. We’re going to be a factor.
“I love Dover. That’s probably my favorite place. The No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Charger has won the Bud Pole several times and still has the track record. We have some very good finishes at Dover and have been in position to challenge for the win. After Dover, we go to Pocono and Michigan. I’ve won at both places. I’m always optimistic. But there’s good reason for the optimism, based on what we’ve accomplished the last two weeks and the races ahead.”
STATS & FACTS
JEREMY MAYFIELD AT DOVER INT'L SPEEDWAY
Sunday’s race will be Mayfield’s 24th start at Dover Int’l Speedway. He has four top-five and eight top-10 finishes at “The Monster Mile.” His best finish of second came in September, 2003.
Mayfield has started from the Bud Pole three times at Dover including a sweep of the No. 1 spot in 2004. He holds the track qualifying record of 22.88 seconds at 161.522 mph, set in June, 2004.
BELIEVE-IT-OR-NOT…A TEAM REQUESTED BLACK FLAG
Mayfield and his No. 19 Dodge team encountered communication problems during the September, 2004, event at Dover. When radio communication failed, the team had to resort to hand signals and pit boards. When it came time to make a green-flag pit stop, the team wasn’t sure Mayfield was getting the message. They asked NASCAR to black-flag the No. 19 in order to get Mayfield to pit road. Mayfield had seen the signals and made the stop before NASCAR had a chance to respond.
SLOW START GAINING MOMENTUM
Although Mayfield has only one DNF on his ledger for 2006 – mechanical problems at Martinsville – he has been caught up in an accident in four of the other 11 events. His best finish this season was 13th at Talladega. He finished 15th Sunday in the Coca-Cola 600.
MAYFIELD IN SELECT COMPANY
Mayfield is one of only seven drivers to make the Chase for the Championship field both years.
